ORANGEBURG -- Junior quarterback Luke Sirgo tossed three touchdown passes and rushed for another to lead Hilton Head Christian to a 33-14 win over Northwood Academy in the SCISA Class AA state championship game Friday.

The Eagles finished the season with a 12-1 record, beating Northwood for the second time this season. Northwood, the defending state champion, finished the season at 11-3.

"Northwood played extremely hard tonight, but it was just our time," said Eagles head coach Tommy Lewis.

The game was decided in the trenches as the Eagles pressured the Chargers all night long. Northwood managed only 120 total yards as the Eagles piled up several sacks and tackles for loss.

"We couldn't stop them," Northwood head coach Jerry Stoots said "They beat us up front. We couldn't get any consistent offense going. They beat us on the line of scrimmage."

Sirgo completed 4 of 6 passes for 109 yards in a decisive third quarter.

The Eagles opened the third quarter with a 74-yard drive, culminating with Sirgo's 37-yard pass to Alex Martin. The score gave Hilton Head Christian a 20-14 lead with 9:54 to play in the third quarter.

The Eagles struck again on their second possession of the quarter, with Sirgo hitting Ethan Gort on a 25-yard pass, pushing the lead to 27-14 with 4:11 remaining in the quarter.

"Being able to hit some passes in the third quarter was the difference in the game," said Sirgo, who finished with 153 yards passing.

Northwood led 14-13 at the half, thanks to a pair of Hilton Head Christian turnovers. Uriah Singleton, who rushed for more than 2,000 yards this season, gained 120 yards and scored twice in the first half. Singleton scored on runs of 19 and 4 yards to give the Chargers the halftime lead.

But Hilton Head Christian's defense limited the Chargers to only 35 yards in the second half.

"The better team won tonight, and they deserve to be the champions," said Stoots. "This game was very similar to the first game, but we had our chances in this one. We just couldn't get any offense going in the second half.
