127 Island Park Drive

Intricately designed Daniel Island home spacious, maneuverable for young families or retirees

Right from the start, Sis Marshall found 127 Island Park Drive to be unconventional. In a good way, mind you.

“It is different and unusual,” says Marshall, residential sales associate with Poston & Co. Real Estate.

A series of eaves marks the exterior design of this Daniel Island home, on the market for $1,099,000.

But not quirky. The 3,315-square-foot home, priced for sale at $1,099,000, has classic lines and elegant trappings. It’s just that custom builder Chris Carson, who lives a block away, incorporated a sense of flair in creating a traditional yet original design.

Possible buyers cross the age spectrum. “I think it would be a young couple with children or a retired couple,” Marshall says.

The Daniel Island home’s unique character starts with the footprint. Rather than a box shape, the cement-plank-sided exterior juts in and out at the front porch, garage and first-floor rooms, to give the facade a more striking appearance.

Stairs lead to the porch, which has durable high-end ipe floors. The product, also known as Brazilian ironwood, is not uncommon on decks. But the Island Park Drive house takes it a step further. The inside floors, even the air vents, are ipe also.

That’s right, unconventional.

The spacious living room showcases a gas fireplace, dual shelving and a big screen television.

Inside, the foyer is highlighted by a vaulted ceiling with chandelier. To the left is the formal dining room, marked by a round wooden table and coffered ceiling. French doors connect the dining area to the front porch, which has views of the sixth hole on the Ralston Creek golf course.

“You find the details throughout the home,” she says.

Across the foyer is a study that could be remodeled as a bedroom. And a powder room is at the end of a hall with side storage closets.

On the back side, the dining room links to a butler's pantry with a small vaguely heart-shaped sink, beverage cooler and fine built-in cabinetry. Opposite is a large wine cellar. “This is your party place,” she says.

The narrow pantry attaches to a wide-open kitchen and family room -- complete with gas fireplace, two sides of shelves and a big-screen TV that conveys with the house.

A large granite countertop on the kitchen island is one of the standout features in the Daniel Island Park home.

The kitchen showcases stainless appliances including a built-in, wood-paneled refrigerator and double oven. Travertine backsplash spotlights the countertops. A gas cooktop and a warming oven are fitted into the island, capped by a single gigantic piece of hand-hewn granite. First-floor ceilings are 12 feet or higher.

The combo kitchen-family room opens to the moderate-sized screened porch. From there, stairs lead to a large brick and stone patio. An uncommon feature is a gas fire pit.

A gate in the fenced yard provides access to the driveway, which is off Olive Lane, and the two-car garage. Concrete on the driveway and on the front walk has a textured look, made by adding salt to the poured cement mixture.

Back inside, the second floor is dominated by a loft at the top of the stairs and four bedrooms. The master suite has a sizable bedroom and luxurious bath with travertine floor, copper fixtures and a large walk-in shower with a hand-held soaker, built-in seats and accessories’ holders. Two clothes closets attach to the bath.

The stone and brick courtyard encircles an unusual gas fire pit.

A Jack-and-Jill bathroom links two guest bedrooms, one that’s now being used as a sitting room. Extra-wide intricate crown moldings are found throughout the house.

For further storage, the home has an attic accessible by a pull-down ladder. And the crawl space, reachable through the garage, is encapsulated to save energy and allow for climate-controlled storage.

An upstairs door opens into the finished space over the garage, which includes a large bedroom, bath, closet and stairs and a separate entrance via the garage. The real estate agent says the space can be used as a mother-in-law suite or for a live-in nanny.

Marshall is clearly impressed with the house. “Is this unbelievable?” she says.

The master bedroom has speakers for a sound system built in the ceiling.

To see 127 Island Park Drive, take Interstate 526 to the Daniel Island exit. Turn left onto Island Park Drive, which heads north of the interstate into what’s known as Daniel Island Park. Turn right at the roundabout and continue less than a mile. A little past Park Crossing Street, the house is on the left.
