Workers await repairs to a leaking natural gas pipe that was cut Thursday at a lot on George Street between King and Meeting streets. The street was closed to vehicle traffic for about two hours while the leak was repaired.

George Street was closed to vehicle traffic between King and Meeting streets for several hours Thursday after a contractor cut a natural gas line with a backhoe, authorities said.

College of Charleston Fire and EMS Chief Rick Krantz said the gas line was cut about 2:50 p.m. by workers who were preparing a vacant lot to be a parking lot for the college's new arena.

"There were markings showing where the utility lines were, but this line wasn't marked," Krantz said.

He said it was probably a result of a mistake made by the company that had plotted out the utility lines prior to construction.

Though vehicles were not permitted, pedestrian traffic was allowed to pass through, but officers were telling smokers to put out their cigarettes.

The lot was the site of a Chinese restaurant before it was purchased by the college, Krantz said.

No one was injured. Workers from South Carolina Electric and Gas responded and capped the leak.

The street was reopened to traffic around 4:30 p.m.
