Mt. Pleasant Artist Guild presents art exhibit at The Cooper River Room

Mount Pleasant Artist Guild will hold a reception for a new exhibit of local artists 5-8 p.m. tonight at The Cooper River Room, in the visitor center at the Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park. Hors d'oeuvres and wine will be served. If you go, you can meet artists and view their latest creations. There will be more than 100 works of art for sale at the exhibit.

The artwork also will be on display 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday.

The guild is a nonprofit organization made up of local artists. Ten percent of the sales from the exhibit will be donated to the guild's scholarship fund.

The Cooper River Room is at 99 Harry M. Hallman Jr. Boulevard beside the Ravenel Bridge.

Charleston Ballet Theatre's 'Grinch'

Kicking off the Charleston Ballet Theatre's second season of its popular Children's Series, the snow-filled family favorite "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" arrived last weekend. You can catch the final two performances of the classic at 11 a.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the Black Box Theatre, 477 King St. Led by CBT dance company newcomer Steven Boston as the title character, the 48-minute-long holiday tale is a family-friendly take on the Dr. Seuss classic. 17 local chefs serve dinner at gala in Marion Square

CNN will serve as presenting sponsor of this year's Circle of Light gala to benefit Darkness to Light, a Charleston-based and internationally known nonprofit dedicated to the prevention of child sexual abuse.

Celebrity Mackenzie Phillips will attend the event and will be presented with the 2009 Voice of Courage Award for her outspoken efforts on the devastating impact of child sexual abuse.

Set in a theme of "Passage to India," the event will feature live camels, henna artists, authentic Indian gowns and decor, plus a Bollywood after-party.

Local chefs are participating from 39 Rue de Jean, COAST, Virginia's on King, Charleston Grill, Fat Hen & Wild Olive with guest chef Bob Waggoner, FIG, Hall's Chophouse, j.b.c, Langdon's Restaurant & Wine Bar, Peninsula Grill and Hank's Seafood, McCrady's, MUSE Restaurant and Wine Bar, Oak Steakhouse, The Ocean Room at Kiawah's The Sanctuary, Sea Island Grill and Wentworth Grill. Hors d'oeuvres will be provided by Grill 225.

In addition to CNN, other participating sponsors include PDA, Soiree by Tara Guerard, Snyder Party Rentals, Southern Wine & Spirits of South Carolina, Charleston Magazine and Seeking Indigo.

FRIDAY

Straight No Chaser

The 10-man a cappella group Straight No Chaser will perform at 8 p.m. Friday at the Charleston Music Hall, 37 John St., downtown. The group's work has been popular around the country, and it's been featured on ABC's "World News Tonight," "CNN Headline News," and the "Today" show.

Women Authors Holiday Book Sale & Signing

Center for Women to hold Lowcountry Women Authors Holiday Book Sale & Signing

The Center for Women, in partnership with the Mount Pleasant Barnes & Noble, will hold its 3rd Annual Lowcountry Women Authors Holiday Book Sale & Signing 2-5 p.m. Sunday. This year's location will be the former Tweeter space next to Bed, Bath & Beyond at Mount Pleasant Towne Centre.

More than 50 local women authors will be on hand for visitors to meet and purchase copies of their latest book autographed for themselves or to give as holiday gifts. Nationally known authors include Nathalie Dupree, Sue Monk Kidd, Cassandra King, Dr. Ann Kulze, Mary Alice Monroe, Nicole Seitz, Anne Rivers Siddons and Marjory Wentworth.

A $10 donation at the door benefits the Center for Women. The event is sponsored by The Fig & The Vine Publishing, Arcadia Publishing, Skirt! Magazine and Mount Pleasant Towne Centre. Refreshments will be provided by Chili's in Mount Pleasant, Saffron Cafe & Bakery and the Charleston Cookie Co. Gift wrapping will be available.
