Burke's Simmons earns 6-AA honors

Region 6-AA football champion Burke dominated the conference's all-star selections.
Burke quarterback Del'Javon Simmons repeats as player of the year, while Michael Heyward is back of the year and Earl Brown is coach of the year. Woodland's Ricky Pringle is the other major award winner, earning lineman of the year.
Simmons accounted for 52 touchdowns and 3,152 total yards in leading the Bulldogs to a 9-3 record. He passed for 2,111 yards and 40 touchdowns. He had 2,440 total yards last year.
Other Bulldogs making the all-region team: Sidney Sanders, John Ross, Michael Jenkins, Brandon Bell, Nathaniel Moten, Lyndon Reed and Fado Brown.
Woodland's selections include Pringle, Bo Wagers, Lashaun Stapleton, Kijaun Edwards, Nagui Wright and Martin Connelly.
Cane Bay had four players on the team: Kyle Spearman, Blake Paez, Josh Hale and Anthony Enos.
Mikell Fosberry, Andrew Bunch and Austin Kinsley are Bishop England's selections.
Rounding out the team are Ashley Ridge's Seamus McKinney, Cameron Cox and Garrett Tech's Javon Hezekiah.
Stratford signings
Two Stratford athletes signed scholarships on Tuesday. Swimmer Bjoern Hornikel signed with Alabama, while softball player Erin Schattle signed with USC Upstate.
Hornikel is a two-time Post and Courier swimmer of the year. He captured two gold medals in the freestyle sprint events. His time of 45.96 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle set a state record.
Region 8-AAAA stars
Region 8-AAAA has announced its all-star volleyball and girls tennis teams.
The all-region volleyball team includes Beaufort's Blake Banner, Mindy Morris and Haley Dickson; West Ashley's Danielle Sullivan and Aubrie Martin; Summerville's Elizabeth Miler and Alex Graham; Fort Dorchester's Maddie DeGeorge, and Colleton County's Brooke Copeland and Kim Wright.
Beaufort's Jeni Whitman is coach of the year.
The all-region tennis team includes Beaufort's Samantha Sullivan, Marion Hohenwarter and Hannah Werner; Summerville's Caroline Green and Morgan Moore; Fort Dorchester's Monica Downey and Brenna Barrineau; West Ashley's Casey Ripley and Aundrea Vealey; Colleton County's Kyla Floyd and Latesha Taylor.
David Riedmayer of Beaufort is coach of the year.
