Biker killed in fall
Motorcycle rider is thrown from overpass
By David MacDougall
A motorcyclist fell to his death from an interstate overpass in Charleston on Tuesday night, police said.
About 8:41 p.m., police were called to the area of Coming Street and the Crosstown Expressway, police spokesman Charles Francis said.
A motorcyclist had been thrown from his motorcycle while riding on the overpass leading from Interstate 26 to the Crosstown Expressway. The motorcycle was thought to have hit the guard rail, Francis said. The motorcyclist, whose identity was not released, was tossed over the railing and fell onto a vacant lot below the overpass. The motorcyclist died at the scene.
The accident is under investigation, Francis said.
James Island resident Lonn Bradley was driving his two sons home from an outing when he saw the motorcycle cross in front of his car and crash into a side wall. At this point, the cyclist had already been ejected. "It was pretty freaky seeing a riderless motorcycle," Bradley said. "It went right in front of me and ran into the wall on the other side."
Bradley and others stopped to see if they could help, but couldn't find the rider. Another motorist went to the Recovery Room, a nightclub on King Street, and told patrons what had happened.
A number of patrons went into the vacant lots underneath the overpasses and one of them discovered the body, Bradley said.
