Walmart truck to help food bank here
The Walmart Foundation has donated a refrigerator food truck to the Lowcountry Food Bank, a gift worth about $85,000.
It was part of the company's "Walmart Gives Back" holiday initiative that will provide $32 million in cash and in-kind donations to charitable organizations across the U.S.
The truck was one of 35 earmarked for food banks affiliated with the Feeding America charity. The gift to the Lowcountry Food Bank included 12 pallets of branded products and fresh apples, according to a news release.
"In this economy, families and seniors across the country who rely on food banks have been hit especially hard," Margaret McKenna, president of the Walmart Foundation, said in a statement. "(Walmart's) partnership with Feeding America is helping us do our part to put more food on the dinner table."
D. Jermaine Husser, executive director the Lowcountry Food Bank, said the gift will help the organization increase its capacity.
"The Lowcountry is extremely grateful to Walmart for its generous commitment to helping thousands of families impacted by food insecurity," Husser said. "With Walmart's support of our new truck, the Lowcountry Food Bank will be able to provide immediate access to healthy food to the most vulnerable population, such as single mothers, children, and older adults."
Walmart's donated food trucks are in response to a call from food banks that were unable to safely transport perishable groceries.
