Myers carries North Charleston over Camden
By Andrew Miller
Danzel Myers didn't miss practice this week. The Camden Bulldogs probably wished he had.
Myers rolled up 424 yards of total offense and accounted for seven touchdowns to lead North Charleston past Camden, 52-22, Friday night.
The Cougars (11-1) will take on Myrtle Beach, a 38-7 winner over Midland Valley, next Friday night in the Class AAA Lower State semifinals.
A week ago, Myers missed two days of practice and was suspended for the first half of the Cougars opening round game against North Myrtle Beach.
This week, Myers showed up early for practice each day and the extra work paid off in a big way.
Myers completed 10 of 21 passes for 292 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 132 yards and three more scores in the victory.
"I know I let the team down last week," Myers said. "I've got no one
to blame, but myself. I wanted to make up for what I did, so I came out ready to go this week."
Meyers had TD runs of 16, 31 and 47 yards and threw TD passes for 26, 82, 62 and 45 yards.
"We're a big play team," Meyers said. "Sometimes that's our Achilles heel because we depend on it, but once we get one, we usually get another."
The Cougars defense struggled stopping the Bulldogs power running game most of the night.
Camden tailback SaVonn Wingate rushed for 162 yards on 18 attempts and quarterback Josh Council added 103 yards, but the Cougars turned the Bulldogs into a one-dimensional team in the fourth quarter. The Cougars sacked Council six times, including five times in the fourth quarter.
"We're a bend but don't break kind of defense," said North Charleston coach Jimmy Brown. "We live to play another down. Once we got the lead, they had to throw the ball and that's something they don't like to do."
The game was tied at 22-22 going into the fourth quarter, but the Cougars scored the final 30 points of the game to record their school record 11th win of the season.
"Our conditioning and our quickness took their toll," Brown said. "I knew if we could into the fourth quarter with the game close, we'd be OK."
