From Sept. 8-Oct. 8, Subway restaurants across the Charleston area held a contest called the Subway Fresh Fit. The contest gave students ages 5-17 the chance to put together posters or short video segments that illustrate how they stay fit. There were 3,000 submissions to the contest.

On Oct. 28, Subway spokesman Jared Fogle made a visit to James Island Charter High School to present awards to two students who entered and won the contest. Brothers Logan and Brandon DiTullio won awards for their posters.

As the runner-up, Brandon was presented with a $100 Subway gift card, and grand-prize winner Logan went home with an award certificate and $1,000 worth of Subway gift cards.

"My kids have been playing sports since they were 3 years old," said Lena DiTullio, Logan and Brandon's mom. "And at no time did any coach ever say, 'Go get a hamburger.' Every coach in every game they ever played said to get something from Subway."

Also, the school won $1,000 for its athletic programs.

Arty junior helps special students

For a third year, James Island Charter junior Olivia Soto has been putting forth an effort to spread artistic ability to the special-needs students at the school.

She began volunteering her freshman year with teacher Brian Shields. Assistant Principal Rich Gordon helped her work the program out, and she talked to her art teacher about supplies she could take to Shields' classroom. She visited the classroom once or twice every week to do art projects with the students.

"My sister is autistic, which is why I became interested in helping the special-needs students," Soto said.

During her freshman year, she helped the students make a table octopus, she said. The students decorated each tentacle. Oct. 28, she started a new project to turn the same table into a graffiti wall.

"They're really talented kids," Soto said. "They're learning to love art, and that's why I'm really happy with this program."

Bobby Cremins speaks at JICHS

On Nov. 3, College of Charleston head basketball coach Bobby Cremins gave a motivational talk to about 300 seniors in the James Island Charter High cafeteria. His topic was goal setting.

"You have to start from the bottom and go from there," Cremins said. "Do not let anything stand in the way of what you want."
