Halsey fundraiser lights up the sky
If you haven't been to the Halsey Institute for Contemporary Art to see its current exhibit, "Aldwyth: work v. / work n.: Collage and Assemblage 1991-2009," just stop whatever you are doing and go there.
You will be amazed. It's probably the most professional exhibit I've seen in Charleston, and it's in the Halsey Institute's new building and installation space.
On Friday, you have a chance to see the gallery during its fundraiser, "New Moon :: New Museum." The event, taking place 7-10 p.m. is geared toward its members and soon-to-be members.
This will be the fifth year of the Moon bash fundraiser and it's always a blast. Enjoy performances by Garage Cuban Band and modern dancer Beth Coiner. There will also be hors d'oeuvres and spirits.
The Halsey Institute for Contemporary Art is at 161 Calhoun St. Guests must either renew, upgrade or join the Halsey Institute's membership program upon entrance or have a current membership. Memberships start at $30. Parking is available in the St. Philip and George Street garages.
For more information, contact the Halsey at 953-5680 or visit www.halsey.cofc.edu.
Emerging artists
"Leave the white ball gowns behind; this isn't your mother's debutante ball," says gallery coordinator Caroline Millard of Eye Level Art.
The upcoming show Friday features 18 of Charleston's best up-and-coming artistic talent.
"With works ranging from killer installations to epic paintings and trippy stencilings, each of these debutante artists provides a breath of fresh air to the Charleston art scene," says Millard.
Expect to see works by Laurel Black, Labanna Bly, Matt Bolt, Matt Bowers, Anson Cyr, Amanda Downey, Clayton Duane, Matt Foreman, Conrad Guevara, Andrae Harrison, J. Jefjords, Hirona Matsuda, Timmy Pakron, Nate Phelps, Rebecca Rocket, Shelley Smith, Tess Thomas and Trever Webster.
Guests can toast the debutantes in their "coming out" party while rocking out to live music from DJ CMNDR.
The event begins at 7 p.m. at 103 Spring Street. For more information, call 278-2374 or visit www.eyelevelart.com.
