The Park Circle area is quickly becoming one of my favorite places to hang out.

Jon Krysa is one of the bartenders at Madra Rua Irish Pub.

Venturing into Madra Rua, the neighborhood Irish pub, is almost like being in Ireland. There are even Irish newspapers on the shelves.

Bartender Jon Krysa is a master at his craft, and creates drinks that you won't soon forget. For the Irish at heart, the bar is known for pouring "the Perfect Pint of Guinness." There are also 19 other beers on tap.

Q: How long have you worked here?

A: Two and a half years. That's how long I've lived in the area. I moved here from Chicago and got this job right away.

Q: What's your background in bartending?

A: This is my first bartending gig. But it's really worked to my advantage, because this place is nothing like anywhere else.

Q: What other stuff do you do around town?

A: I try to get involved with as much as I can in the Park Circle community since I live on the circle. There's always a lot going on all year round.

Q: What's the coolest thing about working on the circle?

A: All the locals. I mean, they really make it worth coming to work.

Q: What is a beverage that you're known for making?

A: The Orange Julius. It tastes like the ones at the mall. It has Captain Morgan, orange juice, triple sec and Sprite. Also, my special pineapple upside-down cake. But that recipe is a secret!

Q: The best thing on Madra Rua's menu?

A: Well, my personal favorite is the fish and chips. But I also think that our steaks and burgers do well for us. You can't get a better steak anywhere, unless you want to pay $50.

Q: What's your favorite holiday for bartending?

A: I like Christmas Night, believe it or not. Everyone is in a good mood, it's all regulars in here and it's pretty laid back. Definitely a lot less hectic than St. Patty's!

Q: Have you ever had to cut someone off?

A: Oh yeah. At least once a week. A lot of times, people just show up already drunk.

Q: The best thing about Charleston's nightlife?

A: The water. I've been to a few parties out on Sullivan's Island, for example, and when you look out at the water while you're having a cocktail ... you just realize that we live in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Q: Advice you would give other bartenders?

A: Don't come to work in a bad mood. You make more money when you're happy. So smile all the time, even if you're pretending.

If you go
