Area high school stars take advantage of early signing period

Six of the Lowcountry’s most prized recruits took advantage of the NCAA’s early signing period by signing national letters of intent Wednesday.
Wando baseball standout Drew Cisco signed to play for the Georgia Bulldogs. The right-handed pitcher played in the Under Armour All-America game in Chicago over the summer, and led the Diamond Devils to a third-place finish in the WWBA World Championship last month.
The area’s top two basketball players also signed Wednesday. Berkeley’s Bruce Ellington, who shines in football, stuck by his word and signed to play basketball for the South Carolina Gamecocks. Fort Dorchester’s R.J. Slawson was a big-name prospect who also decided to go with the Gamecocks.
Three of the state’s best golfers also signed.
Katie Rose Higgins, the South Carolina junior champ, signed to play for the South Carolina Gamecocks women’s team.
Wando’s Caulder Moore, who the South Carolina junior boys’ championship, also signed with South Carolina.
Pinewood Prep’s Austin Cody, The Post and Courier’s golfer of the year, signed with Duke.
Devontae Wright, who helped the Goose Creek boys’ basketball team win the Class AAAA title last winter, signed with The Citadel.
Alex Abrams and Corey Forrester, who helped lead Bishop England to the Class AA baseball championship, signed with Furman and Campbell, respectively.
