Miller, Clinton repeat

Two former collegiate runners repeated as winners of the James Island Connector Run 10K road race Saturday.

Neville Miller, 26, of Mount Pleasant, and Anne Clinton, 27, of Charleston, won in respective times of 33 minutes, 26 seconds and 38:19. Both ran faster times than last year's race.

For Clinton, who ran at Florida State from 2001-2005, her time was more than two minutes faster than last year's time and marked a post-collegiate personal record. The physical education teacher at Cathedral Academy credited her improved fitness to coaching the school's boys cross country team.

"I've been running with them and I'm in a lot better cardiovascular shape this fall," said Clinton, who takes a casual approach to road races. "I usually decide whether to do them the night before or the morning of (the race)."

While many may recognize Miller as a weatherman for WCIV-TV, runners increasingly know him as a regular champion in local road races. The former Missouri runner, who competed in the 800-meter Olympic Trials last year, has won more area races than any other individual runner in the past year, his first on the road race scene.

"It (running races) helps keep me motivated," he said. "I have to run for something."

The 11th annual race, which raises money for college scholarships for disabled students, drew 329 finishers in the 10K run and an unknown number for a 5K walk. The race participation was down by 22 from last year's race and by 132 from the 2007 race. Event organizers are working on holding a half marathon next year, but those plans have not been finalized.
