Streak reaches 98 for Wando girls

Wando just keeps on sailing in girls tennis. The streak reached 98 after Friday's 6-0 shutout of previously unbeaten Dutch Fork in the Class AAAA lower state final at Sumter.

One more victory today against Mauldin would produce a sixth straight state championship for the 23-0 Warriors. That match is set for 10 a.m. at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter.

Mauldin scored a 4-2 victory over Spartanburg in Friday's upper state final to advance to its fourth state final against Wando in five years.

Senior Corin Hallman and seventh-grader Melanie Allen were forced to go three sets before winning close match tiebreakers. The Warriors' No. 2 doubles team also had to go three sets.

Hallman survived a 7-6 (8), 2-6, 10-8 decision against Dutch Fork's Mareli Sanchez in the top spot for her second straight three-set victory in the playoffs.

Waccamaw 4, Bishop England 3

Bishop England's string of two straight Class AA state titles came to an end in the Lower State Class AA title.

The Bishops (16-5) got singles wins from No. 3 Katie Hentz and No. 5 Kelly McManus, but senior Shannon McManus lost a three-set match at No. 2 to Sarah Elliot as Waccamaw gained a 3-2 edge in singles.

Emma Schaafsma/Hunter St. Laurent (BE) def. Sara Moran/Danielle Hartzler, 6-1, 7-5.

Academic Magnet 4, Green Sea/Floyds 3

Senior Kelly Engle and junior Sarah Helms carried the load for Academic Magnet in a 4-3 victory over Green Sea/Floyds (10-4) in the Class A lower state final as they accounted for three of the Raptors' four wins.

Academic Magnet (12-5) will face perennial titlist Christ Church in today's 10 a.m. state final in Sumter.
