Citadel will enforce its standards
I would like to thank the many Lowcountry residents, friends of The Citadel, and alumni who have taken the time to express both their support and concern for The Citadel in the days following very disturbing incidents involving cadets in downtown Charleston and on campus.
Many of you fairly ask what will happen as a result of this unacceptable behavior. Cadets who are found to have dishonored this institution and the ring they wear will be held accountable.
Cadets have been removed from leadership positions, are walking punishment tours and have been restricted to campus.
As we proceed with disciplinary boards, those found responsible for the most egregious violations of rules and regulations face punishments that could include being dismissed from the college.
Our cadets take great pride in their college ring, but they must understand that the ring signifies a responsibility and a duty to all those associated with The Citadel.
They must recognize their actions reflect on The Citadel, on everyone who works here, our supporters, and on thousands of alumni all over the world, including myself.
We set our mark high -- achieve excellence in the education of principled leaders -- and when we fall short, it is cause for all of us to reflect on how we proceed.
We hold ourselves responsible that The Citadel will be a source of pride to all of us.
Our commandant, Col. Leo Mercado, U.S. Marine Corps (Retired), and our senior team have reviewed the incidents and have put procedures in place to reduce the potential of similar occurrences happening in the future.
I work with cadets every day, and I never cease to be impressed by them. Watching them grow and develop into fine young men and women is a source of great pride for me.
Yes, they will make mistakes, but they will learn from them. I have complete trust and confidence in every member of the Corps of Cadets. So should you.
Many thanks for the great interest taken in The Citadel. It is reassuring to know that so many feel a personal stake in the future of our college.
