C of C women third in SoCon
The College of Charleston women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the Southern Conference in voting by the league's coaches.
For the third straight year, Chattanooga was the choice to win the regular season title, receiving 9 of 11 first-place votes. Samford received the two remaining first-place votes and was picked second.
Charleston was one of three teams to place two players on the preseason all-conference team. Junior guard Tonia Gerty (11.6 ppg) and senior guard Jade Hughes (11.3 ppg) were named to the 10-player squad. Chattanooga's Shanara Hollinquest was the preseason player of the year.

Golf
A full field of 120 golfers, minus the defending champion, begins play today in the Charleston City Senior Amateur golf tournament at Municipal Golf Course.
Bert Atkinson, who captured the title in a 17-shot runaway last year, has been participating in the qualifying tournament for the 2010 Champions Tour and is not entered in the City Senior. Warren Peper won the 2007 City Senior and is playing this year.
Today's opening round will be an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start, while the field will be flighted for Sunday's final round.
--Charleston Southern senior Olivia Jordan-Higgins was named the Big South women's Golfer of the Week for events played the final week of the fall season, the conference announced.
Jordan-Higgins tied for third at the Pinehurst Fall Challenge with a 2-over par 146 (72-74) . She was the top finisher out of the 15 Big South golfers in the event, and it was her second consecutive top-three finish.
