Pastor pulls out of race for governor
The Rev. Amos Elliott, a West Ashley pastor, said Wednesday he is bowing out of the Democratic race for governor after his campaign was shut out from the campaign's first debates.
"There are many things I could say that brought me to this conclusion, but I will remain cordial," he said. "My greatest dissolution is the non-support I received from fellow clergymen and area churches. That's my greatest disappointment."
Elliott, 37, said that if he had to support another candidate, it would be Charleston lawyer Mullins McLeod, who is running for the Democratic nomination against Columbia lawyer Dwight Drake, S.C. Education Superintendent Jim Rex and state Sens. Robert Ford and Vincent Sheheen,
Elliott has been a minister for 17 years and currently runs The Church Purchased With His Blood, formerly The Church of God in West Ashley.
Republicans running are 3rd District Rep. Gresham Barrett, Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, state Sen. Larry Grooms, state Rep. Nikki Haley and S.C. Attorney General Henry McMaster.
