No. 6-seeded Radford University (9-10) posted a 2-1 overtime victory over No. 3 Charleston Southern (12-6-2) in the fourth game of the Big South women's soccer tournament at Blackbaud Stadium on Thursday night.
The Highlanders will play No. 7 seed High Point tonight at 7 in the semifinals, its second consecutive semifinal appearance.
Marky Boyce put CSU ahead in the 10th minute with a header off a cross from Jen Vroman and Lindsey Trexler. The goal was Boyce's conference-leading 14th of the season.
Justine Dugger tied the game in the 20th minute when the Highlanders were awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Dugger took the free kick and found the back of the net as her shot went near post.
Neither could find another goal in regulation, so an overtime session was needed to decide the winner.
In the 98th minute, Dugger found space inside the box and took a strike. The shot was saved by Buccaneers goal-keeper Jena Lalich, but Caitlyn Roan was there to finish the play and send Radford into the semifinals.
Dugger led Radford with one goal and one assist, while Roan scored the game-winning goal. Boyce had the lone goal for CSU, while Trexler and Vroman each had an assist.
CSU outshot RU 21-11, and Lisa Lubke earned the win after playing 97:19 and saving two shots. Lalich (7-3-2) also played all 97:19, and she took the loss after allowing the two goals and saving three shots.
After a 0-0 tie in 110 minutes of play, it took a total of nine rounds of penalty kicks for No. 8 Winthrop (5-10-5) to upset the No. 1 seed and regular season champion Liberty (9-7-4), 5-4, in penalty kicks.
The Eagles will play No. 5 seed VMI today at 4:30 p.m. in the semifinals.
Seventh-seeded High Point (12-9) advanced with a 2-0 victory over No. 2 seed Gardner-Webb (6-14-1); and VMI (7-10-2) won 5-3 in a penalty-kick shootout over No. 4 seed Coastal Carolina (7-11-3) after the teams played to a 1-1 tie through overtime.
