Apartment fire leaves 2 homeless

Friday, November 6, 2009

Two people were left homeless Thursday when fire broke out in an apartment on America Street, Charleston fire officials said.

At about 6:30 p.m. firefighters were dispatched to 25 America St., said Mark Ruppel, public information officer for the Fire Department.

When the firefighters arrived there was smoke in the building and a mattress was ablaze. Firefighters quickly knocked the fire down and prevented it from spreading, Ruppel said.

The cause of the blaze was thought to be a malfunctioning air conditioner that ignited the mattress, Ruppel said.

No one was injured, Ruppel said. The American Red Cross was being contacted to provide assistance to the family.
