White has been serving drinks at J. Paul'z since the beginning
J. Paul'z is one of the best spots in James Island to enjoy a delectable tapas menu, and the cocktails are just as chic as the dinner choices.
Candace White, originally from Frederick, Md., is just the bartender to create a perfect martini or pour a favorite wine.
The cozy, laid-back atmosphere is definitely one where it's easy to relax after a long day.
Q: How long have you worked at J. Paul'z?
A: Since day one: December of 2005, when the restaurant opened. So almost four years now.
Q: What's your bartending background?
A: I've only bartended here. But I did work at Southend Brewery about five years ago.
Q: What else do you do?
A: I'm actually the store manager of Candelabra, a store in Mount Pleasant on Coleman Boulevard. I also do soccer and yoga. And does spending time with my dog count? I think it should count.
Q: Your favorite thing on the J. Paul'z menu?
A: We're getting ready to put something back on the menu called the pork ossobucco for the autumn season. It's to die for.
Q: Do you believe you can fall in love while at the bar?
A: Yes! I dated a guy that I met here for three years. He did the landscaping.
Q: Favorite drink to make?
A: A dirty martini. It's my own favorite thing to drink.
Q: Favorite bar in the Charleston area?
A: I'm looking forward to visiting the new bar/restaurant called Amen Street. It's opening where the Crab Shack was on East Bay. I read the menu online and it looks fantastic. Plus, I love supporting local business.
Q: What's your best hangover tip?
A: I take the 5-Hour energy drink on the night that I'm drinking. It has a lot of B vitamins in it. And in the morning, a strong cup of coffee and maybe some pain relievers.
