Versatile actress has a passion for the craft

Tara Denton is impossible to ignore when she is on stage; her presence is electric and undeniable.

Denton recently played the role of Aunt Chris in Bridget Carpenters "Up." She performed her sharp and ruthless character with precision and grace.

"There is very much a piece of my consciousness, a piece of me in all of the characters I play," she said. "That's where the humanity of the craft comes from. Musicians have their relationship with the instrument, visual artists with paints and brushes, photographers with the camera. Theatre is about the words, imagination, theme, vision and the audience."

Denton fell in love with the craft of acting at a theater camp when she was 8 years old. At her first performance, she froze and went through the motions.

"Never again would I walk off stage knowing I didn't give it every ounce of my being. I promised myself I would thrust my heart and soul into the acting craft, " she said when recalling the most memorable learning experience of her acting career.

Watching Denton on stage, you can see the passion and intensity behind every move she makes.

Recent credits include: "Up" and "Killer Joe" with Pure Theatre, "The Laramie Project" with Pure Lab, as well as "Richard III," "Titus Andronicus," "Antigone," "Macbeth" and "Julius Caesar" with the College of Charleston's Shakespeare project.

Her love of Shakespeare goes back to her time living in San Diego, when she became an associate artist with Poor Players Theater Company, a Shakespeare theater troupe.

While there, she performed in "Hamlet," "Taming of the Shrew," "Henry IV," "Twelfth Night," "Much Ado about Nothing" and "Coriolanus."
