Chris Wollard
In 1993, singer/guitarist Chris Wollard helped to form the punk rock band Hot Water Music. He spent the next 13 years touring and recording with the highly successful quartet before the band separated in 2006. Along with Hot Water Music bassist Jason Black and drummer George Rebelo, Wollard went on in 1996 to form the punk rock outfit The Draft, while also embarking on a solo career.
Wollard's recently released solo debut, Chris Wollard & The Ship Thieves, features a stripped down and more contemplative rock spirit than the high-octane riffs and yells of Hot Water Music. While melancholic in its delivery, the music carries a certain sense of urgency and seems to linger long after the last note is struck proving that silence and simplicity often speaks at the greatest volume.
Chris Wollard & The Ship Thieves will perform Tuesday at the Tin Roof, 1117 Magnolia Road. Visit myspace.com/westashleytinroof or call 571-0775 for more information about the show. Visit myspace.com/shipthieves for more information.
Ballyhoo!
Breezy beats, accessible melodies and upbeat lyrics has sustained the surf rock/reggae outfit Ballyhoo! since its debut "Do It For The Money!" was released on Surf Dog Records (Brian Setzer, Stray Cats, Slightly Stoopid) a few years ago.
The Maryland-based quartet's newest album "Cheers" carries on the beach-themed, carefree mood and draws heavy comparisons to some of the band's obvious influences including 311 and Incubus.
Ballyhoo! will perform tonight at the Music Farm, 32 Ann St., with B Foundation, Honk Whitey and Mike Pinto. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance/$12 the day of the show and are available at the door or at etix.com. Call 577-6989 or visit musicfarm.com for more information on the show.
