Chick-fil-A holds Spirit Challenge
The James Island Charter and West Ashley high schools are squaring off in the Chick-fil-A Shake for Spirit Challenge.
Chick-fil-A restaurants at 849 Folly Road on James Island and in West Ashley at 2013 Magwood Drive are competing in the sales of Hand-Spun Milkshakes. Students, teachers, coaches, fans, community members and families were urged to buy milkshakes from 6:30 a.m. Nov. 2 to 5 p.m. Nov. 6.
James Island High fans are encouraged to purchase their shakes at the Folly Road store, and West Ashley High fans are encouraged to purchase theirs at Magwood. The winner will be announced at halftime of the 7:30 p.m. Nov. 6 football game between the two schools at West Ashley High School.
The two Chick-fil-A restaurants hosted activities throughout the week to get Trojan or Wildcat fans in the school spirit. At the end of the competition, all students, game participants and fans of the winning school that are present at the game will receive a coupon for a free Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich.
Catholic School hosts open house
Charleston Catholic School, 888-A King St., Charleston, will hold an open house at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 9 for 4- and 5-year-old kindergarten and grades 1-8.

Academy sets benefit event
The Charleston Academy of Music will host a benefit concert at 5 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Charleston Library Society, 164 King St., downtown Charleston, with all proceeds to CAM's Honors Program scholarships.
The concert will feature CAM Honors Program students Nicholas Bentz (violin), Shannon Fitzhenry (violin) and Micah McLaurin (piano) as well as CAM's newest after-school orchestra program for children, Kidzymphony.
The students study under CSO Concertmaster Yuriy Bekker, pianist Enrique Graf and violinist Tomas Jakubek.
Due to limited seating, RSVP reservations by calling 805-7794. The concert is free, but donations will be accepted.
'Willy Wonka Jr.' presentation set
The Lower and Middle School Drama Company of First Baptist School will present "Willy Wonka Junior" at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 at the John Hamrick Activities Center on 10 Hayne St.
Tickets are $5 and are available at the door. Those attending may bring toiletry items for the Lowcountry Orphan Relief to receive $1 off admission. Eighty-five students in grades 1-8 will be performing. This is the fifth production under the direction of Cindy Frenz and Martha Thigpen.
Registration set for braille classes
Registration is under way for fall braille writing and reading classes held at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind's Low Country Regional Outreach Center at 1064 Gardner Road in Charleston.
Flowing Fingers, designed for parents and community members, is a 12-week program that will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday evenings beginning Nov. 10. The cost is $125. An optional beginner's packet of materials is available for $8.
