Tech hazards
Driving out each day, I am hopeful I don't encounter some self-consumed driver coming toward me while texting or cell phoning, who could end my life by not paying attention.
Now, I gather I have more to concern me. As recently reported, an airplane overshot its destination by over 100 miles while the pilots were on their laptops (against FAA regulation).
What's goin' on?

'No victory'
Sure Bridgepointe troubles are receding -- on the backs of taxpayers!
Although I am happy to see this drainage problem being fixed as a homeowner in Bridgepointe, I am also saddened. Our hard-earned tax dollars are being used to correct a mistake, and city officials just look the other way. They admitted the drainage system was installed incorrectly.
Why did it take a flood for us to be heard?
What we went through never should have happened. Now we will approach the auditors and request a new assessment for tax purposes. It will mean more lost revenue for our city because of someone else's mistake.
Not a single home has been sold in this neighborhood since the flood and our drop in value is not just because of the economy. I have the utmost respect for Larry Shirley, but where was an admission of guilt from the city when we needed it?
Almost five years later, they are correcting an issue that we told them the solution to, and people see this as a victory? This is no victory. This is government at its worst.

Art auction
In the past there has been little in the news concerning the annual Charleston Art Auctions. These auctions are perhaps the best art auctions held in Charleston. Some of the artists are Alfred Hutty, Minnie Mikell, Alice R. Huger Smith and William Halsey.
The fourth auction will be Nov. 8 at the Renaissance Hotel at 68 Wentworth St. at 7:15 p.m. It is sponsored by Morris & Whiteside Gallery from Hilton Head and the American Art Collector magazine. It is important to know that it is by reservation only.
They have a great Website for this auction, CharlestonArtAuction.com, where their catalogue can be seen. The Sylvan Gallery at 171 King St. is exhibiting this artwork for public viewing until the auction. Charleston needs more art auctions of this quality. The city of Charleston and the local media should do more to promote art and antiques auctions.

No service
First, banks began charging a fee to cash a check drawn on that bank payable to a non-account holder. I recently found out what was second.
I was at a loss for words when I left First Federal Bank in Summerville. I had stopped in to change three $20s into smaller bills. After telling the cashier what I needed, she asked if I was an account holder.
When I answered no, she said she couldn't help me. She's probably still smiling about the dumbfounded expression on my face as I left.
What's next, a coin operated drive-up window?
