Leaving nets up questioned

ISLE OF PALMS — The city says it isn't trying to spike beach volleyball, but it wants to take a look at whether leaving nets and supporting poles up overnight is legal.

"We are going to try to do what we can to work this out. We're trying to be good stewards of our beach and keep it safe," said City Administrator Linda Tucker.

The Post and Courier

Jordan Cheatham (from left), Cameron Dyson, Alison Motroni and Justin Cook play a friendly game of beach volleyball Thursday behind the Windjammer on the Isle of Palms. The Windjammer has three courts out on the beach and one right behind its building.

Someone complained to police about volleyball nets left overnight in front of the Windjammer nightclub, and police contacted club owner Bobby Ross to discuss the situation.

Beach volleyball has been a tradition associated with the Windjammer for more than 30 years, Ross said. On Thursday, Ross said he is optimistic the situation can be resolved. "I really honestly think it's going to be taken care of," he said.

Two nets were up on the beach in front of the club on Thursday. Ross said it's not practical to uproot the supporting net posts at night, take them off the beach and put them back out in the morning because the poles are so firmly dug into the ground. However, he said the nets could be moved on a nightly basis.

Ross said he did not know who complained about the volleyball nets. The nightclub also has a volleyball net set up on sand behind the dune line that is apparently not affected by the situation.

Tucker said the issue is whether the volleyball nets and supporting posts fall within the framework of the ordinance governing things left on the beach overnight. For that reason, the ordinance is being re-examined to clarify the situation, she said.

"No one is wanting to see the tradition have to come to an end," she said. She said the situation is an "unintended consequence" of the ordinance, which may need to be refined. However, it is a reasonable concern that someone walking or running on the beach might run into one of the volleyball net poles, she said. For that reason, reflectors could be put on the poles. Another issue is whether the volleyball poles are an impediment to nesting sea turtles. Conservationists have said that's not the case, she said.

Last June, City Council passed the ordinance that may affect beach volleyball equipment being left out overnight. It was intended to address the problem of tents, chairs and coolers left overnight on the beach that wash into the surf. Tent poles break and become jagged at the ends.

"They actually can impale someone," Tucker said. So far, no one has been seriously injured, she said. Police removed at least two shade tents from the beach on Thursday morning after tagging them the night before, she said.

This is an example of the insanity we are witnessing in our governance nationwide. It's all based on paranoia and the obvious insecurity if those dying to minutely control others.

Life has enough real hazards. Concocting imaginary ones is indicative of collective and in some cases individual psychosis. Immagining things and then imposing oneself on others is bad business. The question is WHY. What, exactly, is wrong with the people who promulgate this nonsense? Is it indicative of some people NEEDING something to be scared of? Of some people needing to impose themselves on others to feel like they're "making a difference"? A combination? Something else entirely?

More likely it was one of those outsiders who've descended on the area like locusts, checkbook in hand, bent on destroying the fabric and flavor of what used to be an enchanting place to live. They are intent on sterilizing what was once the gem of the Atlantic Coast so that it looks, ironically, like the faceless, impersonal Rustbelt paradise they fled to seek refuge here. They're always in a hurry to tell us "how we did it back where I used to live."

Unfortunately, we have reached the point in society where one person, albeit someone who, as the previous poster suggested, may be suffering some psychosis, can ruin things for everyone else.

I returned here after nearly thirty years in Atlanta and Dallas, hoping to rediscover the city and people that had held my heart for years. Lamentably, ten years from now, this place is going to look just like those two cities.

It's a shame that some people just have to suck the FUN out of life lately!!! It's summer time and volleyball is great activity, let it stay up for the summer and after summer then take it down. I mean is it really hurting anyone? On Virginia Beach they leave their nets up for people to play all summer! If you don't like beach activities then maybe you shouldn't live on the beach!

I bet someone was running along in the early morning light and didn't see the nets. They probably have a nice little skin mark on their face.

I can see it now......they got up and looked around to see if anyone noticed them flop to the ground.

Now their ego was bruised so they want to make someone pay.

Reflectors will take care of the problem.

First dogs are kicked off the beach, then it's illegal to build sandcastles and dig holes in the sand and now it's illegal to play volleyball on the beach? A ban on sunbathing next? Swimming? Walking on the beach? Collecting seashells

1.The dogs have to go because they bite, fight, sniff, bark and go to the bathroom. Fish do not like dog hair.
2.Sandcastle building is dangerous because of holes that injure and cause unnatural sand shifting, people unknowingly digging into turtle eggs and may distract family members from watching other family members swim for safety's sake.
3.Volleyball can lead to fatigue and injured feet and legs and may lead to depression and embarrassment when losing teams lose.
4.Sunbathing can show too much skin enticing to oglers and of course lead to cancer and painful sunburn. The weight enhanced may be offended by the bodies of the svelte.
5.Sharks and stingrays love human swimmers. This puts a burden on rescuers and hospitals.
6.Picking up seashells is bad because the seashells break down and turn into new sand. When you collect them there is no new sand and erosion occurs.
7. Walking should be the only thing allowed thereby allowing people to get off the beach so as not to disturb terns and gulls.

The beach is indeed a place that has to be heavily regulated and monitored. I am on my way to Columbia and then to D.C., I will fit right in.

Kid, how dumb I was not to realize all of the damage that I have done to the environment by "enjoying" our natural resources. From now on, I will only walk on the beach in extremely short distances, as far from the water as possible and will try to remember to "tread lightly". Additionally, I will be covered from head to toe to keep my skin from being exposed from the dangerous effects from the sun. Any sunbathers, volleyball players, seashell collectors, dogs, swimmers or joggers will be immediately reported to the local, state and/or federal authorities. Maybe the Arabs have had it right all along...

Why make this more complicated than it has to be? The only danger I could see in having the net left out overnight would be if birds were to fly into it.

Leave the poles in and disconnect the net at one side, roll it up, and attach it to the other pole.

See how easy it is?

I can no longer keep track of what you are not allowed to do at the beach. I remember the bonfire cookouts, coolers of beer, fishing, sailing, sandcastles and even camping of my childhood.

The beach is now a resource for extracting money from the real estate cycle. Sell, appreciate, crash, sell, appreciate, and crash again.

Soon, no one will remember what has been lost. Let us hope the money was worth it.

My father left us a front beach condo at Wild Dunes which we were able to sell before the crash. What he really wanted was a little beach house, but that isn't possible any longer. The land is too valuable for a beat up little house open to the breeze. The appliances would corrode, You couldn't cover the taxes, insurance and overhead on the rentals.

I believe the beach is worthless, let us sell it off and say goodby.

Hold on now, I think we're all missing the important subtlety of the article. Take note of how even the people who are supposed to be enforcing the ordinance are providing evidence and reasons why having that volleyball net there is no big deal.

It seems like rather than applying the ordinance willy-nilly to anything and everything they can, the city is looking to use this as an example of what the ordinance isn't intended to cover.
