Vanderbilt tops South Carolina 5-4 in SEC tourney
By Staff report
HOOVER, Ala. Jonathan White drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk in the top of the ninth inning to give Vanderbilt a 5-4 victory over South Carolina early Friday morning in the Southeastern Conference baseball tournament.
White, who also had three hits, fouled off three consecutive pitches from South Carolina pitcher Michael Roth before drawing the walk.
Chase Reid got the save for the eighth-seeded Commodores (33-24) by pitching out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth.
Aaron Westlake and Andrew Giobbi hit back-to-back solo home runs in the sixth to give Vanderbilt a 4-2 lead.
The Gamecocks (38-20) rallied with two runs in the eighth. Pinch-hitter Parker Banks provided the game-tying hit with a two-out RBI double down the left-field line.
South Carolina will play LSU tonight in an elimination game. Vanderbilt receives a bye and will not play again until Saturday.
