I think I'll avoid patronizing the Charleston Blues Club on S.C. Highway 162 thus enhancing my chances of living a long life.

I have friends that live out that way and I hear the stories about these places. Drunk drivers speeding, fights, shootings.......whats next, some innocent person getting hurt?

I wish the county would shut them down.

These 'clubs' are not going to be shut down until you your county council members & other local politicians find a pair and finally shut down these hole-in-the-wall joints that allow such behavior.

And yes they ALLOW the behaviors.

I say pass ordinances that if more than 3 incidents like this happen in one year, licenses are revoked and club is shut down. And prior to shutting them down, impose a ludicrous fine for each incident in order to cripple them.

Will there possibly be some 'innocent' club owners affected? Yes.

Will some of the owners just open up other clubs somewhere else? Yes

However, you will weed out some of the fools that want to SOLELY cater to the criminal element by opening lawless juke joints.

well crankyyankee, I'm not sure what you said has anything to do with the article.

But while you are there you also have to add in that many of this black men that are shot are often shot for relatively no reason. That statistic does not only include those who may be involved with drugs or criminal activity. It's those that are robbed, shot in the crossfire or got shot because they were in "arguments" for whatever reason. A lot of times it's just where you live, other times it may be who you are hanging with and the rest of the time you are just screwed. Case in point...this:

or even worse... any number of the kids killed in Chicago in the past few years as innocent bystanders. Including a young teenager girl shot and killed when two guys got into an argument on the bus over some guy accidentally touching another guys hand. (I wish I was kidding about that...but it's not laughing matter...)

Why do I bring that up? Well when you insisted on throwing that stat out there you seemed to suggest that being 30 times more likely to be shot is somehow the fault of all black males, instead of a few low lifes. It's like suggesting that because I'm more likely to get heart disease or high blood pressure even if I live a healthy life it's somehow my fault. Not always the case.

I happen to live just behind the privacy fence in Blufton Oaks. We have made several calls at 2:00, 3:00, 4:00 etc. in the morning. On Thursday morning my husband and I were awakened by the gunshots @ 3:50a.m. This further rattled our sense of security since we had an attempted breakin to our home on Wednesday morning. Speaking of the fatal shooting that happened in April of 2008 my husband was standing by the road (hwy 162) waiting for Charleston County Sheriff's Dept. to arrive when that shooting took place. I have also gone to Hollywood Town Hall and filed complaints about the noise. We are told that there is no law about how late they can stay open only that they cannot serve alcohol after 2:00a.m. I know for sure they are still drinking @ 3:00 and 4:00 in the morning. We hear them breaking bottles when they throw them in the trash. Please if anyone has any suggestions about how to get this placed closed down for good let me know. I have children that are terrified to even play in their own yard for fear that someone will shoot them.

May 22, 2009. Shortly before 9:21 AM the vehicle license tag --- EIT 505 --- was stolen off of a vehicle in N. Chas.. The owners promptly filed a police report and went to the SCDMV for a replacement tag-whereupon they were improperly charged $6.00 to replace the "STOLEN PROPERTY".
If anyone spots this tag please call the police.

Couple of things you can do:

1. Have the police compile the stats on how many times they have been called to the club and how many assaults, shootings, etc., there have been.

2. Go to your city/county rep and encourage them to pass an ordinance to close down the club based on the stats or have the club close at 2AM like they have done in Charleston, N. Charleston, and Summerville.

3. Bring pressure on the club owners by organizing a protest in front of the club.

These licenses are issued by the state, and I do know that the licenses can be revoked under certain conditions. However, I do not know what those conditions are in particular. I think one is some kind of nuisance criteria. Find out what department of state government issues the permits and ask them. The local sheriff can initiate this too, if he wants to, I'm pretty sure. Actually, there are a whole host of people in local and state government that can help you find out how to shut them down, but for some reason, maybe they don't want to be bothered. You are, after all, only a single citizen that can neither hurt nor help them.
