COLUMBIA - South Carolina legislators are expected to take up Gov. Mark Sanford's vetoes of the $5.7 billion state budget and a demand that he request nearly $700 million in federal stimulus cash.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dan Cooper of Piedmont will have the job Wednesday of mustering the votes to trump Sanford. Finance Committee Chairman Hugh Leatherman of Florence expects Sanford won't find enough support in the Senate.

Sanford challenged the Legislature's authority to require him to seek the federal stimulus cash within five days but isn't saying if he'll challenge that in court.

The governor said he will first try to make his vetoes stick. Beaufort Sen. Tom Davis is one of Sanford's top allies and says he doesn't know if Sanford has the votes.
