Clemson's Schaus on first team
By Travis Sawchik
CLEMSON — Though Florida State's Mike Martin was named ACC Coach of the Year on Monday, the conference baseball coaches must also think the 2009 campaign has been one of Jack Leggett's best coaching jobs.
Clemson outfielder Jeff Schaus was named to the conference's first team Monday, the only selection from the No. 13 Tigers (39-17), who concluded the regular season in second place in the Atlantic Division with a 19-11 league record.
Schaus is batting .337 with 11 home runs, 43 RBIs, nine steals and a .440 on-base mark. Schaus entered the season in the shadow of Ben Paulsen and Kyle Parker, but has been Clemson's best hitter in conference play, posting a .367 batting average and 14 walks against 10 strikeouts against ACC opponents.
North Carolina's Dustin Ackley was named the conference's player of the year. Georgia Tech's Deck McGuire was tabbed as the top pitcher, and Virginia's pitcher and first baseman Danny Hultzen earned freshman of the year honors.
Virginia, Clemson's opening opponent in the ACC Tournament on Thursday in Durham, N.C., earned an ACC-best five first-team selections. North Carolina and Georgia Tech followed with three first-team selections.
The teams were voted on by the ACC's head coaches.
