ATV passenger listed as critical

Tuesday, May 19, 2009

Kayla Beczynski, 15, was in critical condition Monday at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital after an ATV accident Saturday in Summerville, officials said.

The crash happened in a wooded area adjacent to the Sawmill Branch Trail north of Luden Drive. Beczynski was a passenger on the ATV.

Witnesses told police that the ATV appeared to be going too fast for conditions when it left the trail and flipped into the air.

Dang that's bad. 4 wheelers are dangerous in the hands of teens or kids. Gotta ride in a safe place.
Hope she pulls through.

chucktonian are you kidding me!!! Well consider me and my husband child abusers then. We've got 3 kids and they've got their own 4 wheeler they ride. It's called supervision and teaching them how to properly ride an ATV and making sure they wear a helmet. Get a life!!!!

These 4 wheelers are NOT toys!! They are motorized vehicles. They should be treated with the same respect we use when driving cars, etc. They go fast and things can go from bad to worse in seconds. It is a shame that this girl will bear the scars of this stupid act for a lifetime. Rumor has it that she is paralyzed. I hope she will overcome the odds.

chucktonian -
If you read the post from youngatheart, you will see that the parents were not aware she was riding it. You can't tell me that as a teen you never did something your parents didn't know you were doing. I can't believe you would be so harsh when this child is fighting to live. My prayers are with her and her family.

chucktonian- You don't know what you're talking about. The parents had NO IDEA she was going out. The adult neighbor invited her to do it. Wanna have someone arrested ? How about the the driver who was on adderall and valium while driving it like a bat outta hell. Please pray for Kayla and her family right now. They have done absolutely nothing wrong.

I view ATV's as inherently dangerous, but I understand that proper training can reduce the risk. I also know that it is not my place to tell others what they should or shouldn't do, unless, of course, it involves someone for whom I am responsible. ATV's are very powerful and much like a 500 horsepower car in untrained hands, the danger factor is out of proportion to the benefit (fun) of riding/driving one.

"Death Machine" Somebody here is an idiot! ATV's don't kill people, Careless/Inexperienced drivers do! I guess I'm a child abuser too! My kids have grown-up riding them (As well as dirt bikes) The difference is that my kids were instructed in how to ride and received a lot of coaching (or yelling as the case may be) from me and my wife as to the proper operation of the ATV's. my 12 year old son can operate a full-sized ATV as well as any "adult" that i've seen. My kids ALWAYS were helmets too!

Saying that 'ATV's kill people" is about as MORONIC a statement as saying "Unloaded guns kill people"! The problem is both is that some people don't know the proper operation/handling of either one.

For those who feel so strongly about safety- support bill H3681 (Chandler's Law) by calling your representatives TODAY in the senate. It's on the floor and is finally a bill that is a compromise between the rights of individuals and the need for safety. ATV use isn't going away in South Carolina, so we need to find a way to work together to keep kids safe. Supervision, gear and training are key!

This isn't about ATV safety and this isn't about the "driver". This IS about 15 year old Kayla Beczynski laying in that hospital bed FIGHTING for her life at MUSC! She is in desperate need of prayers and positive energy. So please, instead of bickering back and forth of who or what is at fault, let's use this energy to PRAY that Kayla fully recovers! It is devastating to see a child and her family go through this. All of this "should of" and "could of" isn't helping Kayla at this point- so please, just stop...and pray!

My prayers are with Kayla and her family.. I don't know them, but I have a 17 year old daughter and can't imagine what they must be going through.

There isn't ONE person on this thread that can truthfully say they lived their lives fully compliant while growing up and NEVER did anything their parents didn't know about. Please.

Quit casting stones and throw some prayers their way instead.

My response was based on the idiotic post about arresting her parents. My emotions got the best of me. I have been praying and praying and I won't stop. My heart is so heavy. I probably should not have even looked at the comments. I know better. To Kayla and her family : You are constantly in our thoughts and prayers. God bless you all.

Coolfreaknbeans... you must know Katrina, haha. Maybe she will finally be held accountable for her actions. The entire time I have known her she has never been sober, weather it be drugs (prescription or illegal) or alcohol. Hopefully they gave her some sort of drug & alcohol screening when she was in the hospital. I do pray for kayla, whom i have never met. I do pray that justice will be served, she may have made a bad decision at 15 to go out riding an ATV, but at 30, Katrina should have known better than to do what she did.

Both Kayla and her family are in our prayers....

I too believe that the accident could have been avoided but now there is a poor girl laying in a hospital bed fighting for her life because of the carelessness of a grown woman that makes bad choices in her day to day life. I am praying for Kayla and her family! I hope she beats the odds and makes a full recovery. Until then I hope that there is more than just a slap on the wrist for what has happend

I feel bad for this girl, but having another law on the books would not have prevented this. She was not driving and the manufacturer already has warnings all over these things stating that they are not to be used to carry passengers. All "Chandlers Law" will do is give government a vested interest in something that they do not have the resources to enforce. Hopes and prayers go out to this little girl and her family.

I can't believe someone would have the "BALLS" to come on here and write a post saying this poor child's parents should be charged because 4 wheelers are dangerous. What kind of idiot are you? I guess because my husband and I let our 14 year old ride 4 wheelers that we are child abusers. Ha! Get a life. Write something that makes sense, instead of something so damn stupid....................
