9 hospitalized after I-95 crash

Sunday, May 17, 2009

ST. GEORGE — At least three people were in critical condition Saturday night at the Medical University of South Carolina after a three-car wreck occurred about noon on Interstate 95, four miles north of St. George.

Those listed as critical were Lewis Tirabo, 44, of New Jersey; Jeff Gentile, 42, of New Jersey; and Albert Powers, 72, of South Carolina, according to the Highway Patrol.

Tirabo was driving a pick-up truck, followed by Gentile, who was driving a mini-van. Tirabo and Gentile slowed for traffic, and Powers, who was driving a recreational vehicle, hit Gentile's vehicle, which in turn struck Tirabo's truck, according to the Highway Patrol.

Powers was charged with driving too fast for conditions, the patrol said.

Five people injured in the accident were flown by helicopter to MUSC. In all, nine people were taken to area hospitals. The names and conditions of the other victims were not available.

The incident occurred in the southbound lane of I-95 near mile marker 81. Traffic was stopped for two hours on I-95 northbound and southbound while authorities responded to the accident.

I-95 southbound= slowdown. I wish SC would get out of the 19th century with their road systems. I-95 is always bumper to bumper and many times at a standstill during peak traffic. Suddenly on the Georgia border its 6 lanes with no problems. And tourism is SC's big attraction?

I saw this wreck yesterday (I'm a tourist). I cannot believe anyone lived. The sight of the RV turned my stomach.

It's nice to see more and more old geezers driving these monolithic vehicles around these United States. Gives me the warm fuzzies to see Pops and his old gray mare barreling down the 'ol highway in one of these monsters!

Three of the people injured in the wreck were small children....7 years, 4 years and a nine-month old baby. It's a miracle they survived. I know it wasn't intentional, but people need to start slowing down and paying attention to what they're doing on the road. Those 3 babies could have died.
