Area's dining scene gains new restaurants

Thursday, May 7, 2009

The Old Post Office Restaurant on Edisto Island is open once again under new owners.

Formerly known as the Old Post Office, the restaurant at 1442 S.C. Highway 174 serves Lowcountry Southern cuisine in a newly renovated and redecorated setting with a loft-style bar overlooking Store Creek.

Owners Adam and Toniann Morris, past and present employees of area school districts, are now residents of Edisto Island.

Philip Bardin of Columbia is the executive chef. The restaurant has 12 employees.

Located 45 minutes south of Charleston, the restaurant will serve dinner nightly Tuesday through Saturday. The bar opens at 5 p.m. Reservations are recommended.

On the menu

The Summerville restaurant scene has a new addition.

Keith Snyder and Jason Robbins of Snyder Event Rentals have teamed up with Bob Brittenham and wife Darlene to open Montreux Bar and Grill. Located at 127 W. Richardson Ave., the establishment takes its name from the Swiss city that inspired Deep Purple's rock classic "Smoke on the Water."

The owners have decorated the exposed brick walls of the newly renovated restaurant with paintings of rock 'n' roll icons. Montreux offers sandwiches, salads and appetizers, but it also has a back room with pool tables, video games, dart boards and an 8-foot, high-definition projection screen for big games and events.

Wider net

Gilligan's Steamer and Raw Bar recently dropped anchor on its ninth location. The newest seafood diner is at 13707 Ocean Highway on Pawleys Island. The booths are lined with saltwater fish tanks. Its other restaurants are in Beaufort, Goose Creek, Johns Island, Lexington, Moncks Corner, Mount Pleasant, Summerville and downtown Charleston.

Bon appetit

Just in time for Mother's Day, Coco's Cafe in Mount Pleasant is adding Sunday brunch. The 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. serving will offer a varying buffet of gourmet French fare with recurring staples, such as French toast and frittatas.

Lunch line

It's not too late for teachers to take advantage of a special offer at Manny's Neighborhood Grille. Through tomorrow, the Mediterranean/Greek/American-fare restaurant at 1680 Old Towne Road in West Ashley will offer all educators a 10 percent discount as part of Teacher Appreciation Week. Teachers will need to show their school IDs.
