Lata named Southeast's best chef
By Nathalie Dupree
Mike Lata, owner of Charleston's FIG restaurant, was named the best chef in the Southeast at the James Beard Foundation Awards ceremony Monday in New York City.
It was the second year in a row a Charleston chef walked away with the prestigious culinary award. Hominy Grill owner Robert Stehling won Best Chef Southeast last year.

Lata credited his partner, Adam Nemirow, and his loyal staff for enabling him to win.
"You are only as good as the people around you," he said on the red carpet at the Lincoln Center.
FIG celebrated its sixth birthday in April. Self-taught, Lata was formerly chef of Anson restaurant after working at Ciboulette in Atlanta. It was his third James Beard nomination. "Three .times the charm," he said.
Also nominated for this year's Best Chef Southeast award was Bob Waggoner, formerly of Charleston Grill. Sean Brock of McCrady's was nominated for Rising Star Chef.
It is rare for a city the size of Charleston to have three nominees for the awards, dubbed "the Oscars of the food world."
