Newberry Academy reopens, but other SC schools still closed for flu outbreak
COLUMBIA - The private South Carolina school where the state's first swine flu cases were confirmed is reopening, even as public schools in the area remain closed.
Newberry Academy reopened Monday, after being closed all last week because students who had been in Mexico on a trip last month became ill. Newberry County public schools closed Friday and remained closed Monday because of the outbreak.
A Greenville County school also reopened Monday after closing last week over flu concerns. Officials at Maudlin High School said students who returned from a trip to Walt Disney World ill were tested for swine flu, but none had the illness.
State health officials say 16 cases have been confirmed in South Carolina, 15 in Newberry County and one in Laurens County.
