Two Berkeley County men died in separate fatal wrecks this weekend.

Calvin Washington, 59, of the Wando community, died when he ran off Cainhoy Road about 9:50 p.m. Saturday, Berkeley County Deputy Coroner Bill Salisbury said. Washington was driving east in a 2004 Ford pickup when he ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected, came back across the left side and hit a tree, Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Bob Beres said. Washington was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

In the second wreck, Antonio Portillo, 17, of Moncks Corner, died when he ran off Old Whitesville Road about 2:55 a.m. Sunday, Salisbury said.

Portillo was traveling west when his 1998 Chevrolet ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected, came back across the left side and hit a tree, said Beres, who reported the time of the wreck as 2:20 a.m. Portillo was pinned in the car and had to be extracted by the Whitesville Fire Department.

He was not wearing a seatbealt and was pronounced dead at the scene, Salisbury said.

I suppose the 59yr. old was wearing a safety belt. Looks like a wash then for life saving seat belts and primary enforcement from the nanny state.

The article specifically states that 'Washington was not wearing a seatbelt". It also states that he was ejected from the vehicle.

This is now 4 auto accidents in 2 weeks in our area. Please wear your seat belts. I lost my fiance Debra Nunan on Feb 27. We (the families) are hurting, this is just such a waste and to be left to pick up the pieces in such a sudden loss is not fun. I am so sorry to both of these families. I feel your pain. It's terrible, and it hurts.

lowcountryrob-I am so sorry for your loss. As time goes by you will become stronger and begin to pick up the pieces, little by little. Please where your seatbelts folks. Once you get in the habit, you'll feel "naked" without it. I don't even back out of a driveway or parking space without being buckled.

So with the second guy, he ran off the road at 2:55 a.m. but the time of the wreck was 2:20 a.m.? HUH?

Also, I wonder what a 17-year-old was doing out that late. Not saying he was up to no good; it's just that I am wondering.

My thoughts do go out to the families. I just wish these guys had buckled up, because they possibly could have prevented their own deaths.

Poligadfly, reading comprehension please.

Thanks guys, I am in such a fog. I loved her so much and she made a mistake that I now live with every moment since this happened. The pain when you lose some that suddenly is almost to hard to bare. I will be OK, but I have not ever had something so painful happen to me in a long time and I am 48 years old. These families are in pain, just as I am, I hate it for them.

lowcountryrob : As corny as it may sound to some, maybe you could (when your ready) share your story with others. You have a very personal message to share that could save others lives. Your story, as heartbreaking and tragic as it is, would be helpful to young new drivers for example. Good Luck and again I'm so sorry for your loss.

I would be glad too. The pain this brings to families is devastating. Debra was just 80 yards from her home. She was only going 25-30 miles per hour. I cannot imagine what was going on in her mind, except she may have been putting her seatbelt on as she was going down the road. When her chest hit the steering wheel it stopped her heart. GONE! To get a phone call as I got on that Friday night 2 weeks ago will buckle your knees. No one's worst enemy should EVER get a phone call like that. The seatbelt would have saved her, and the accident would just be a conversation.

lowcountryrob: That's so sad. She was so close to home too. "The seatbelt would have saved her, and the accident would just be a conversation." Thats so true.
