No foul play in Boathouse fire, according to preliminary investigation

The Post and Courier
Investigator Rocky Burke with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office looks over the scene of the fire at The Boathouse on Ellis Creek Thursday.
Foul play was not a factor in the blaze that destroyed the Boathouse restaurant on James Island this morning, Charleston Fire officials say.
Public information officer Mark Ruppel said the department's chief investigator has ruled out foul play during a preliminary investigation. It appears the fire started in the kitchen area, he said.
Both Charleston Fire Department and the James Island Fire Department responded to the fire at 1:16 a.m. Firefighters could see the flames 35-40 feet high while making the trek over the James Island Connector, said James Island Deputy Fire Chief Matt Rhoton.
Rhoton said the Charleston Fire Department is investigating.
The Post and Courier
Firefighters work hard to settle the blaze that occurred early Thursday morning at the recently opened Boathouse Restaurant on James Island.
Ruppel said they hope to have a full investigation completed in about a week.
The Boathouse, located at 1241 Harbor View Road, was formerly Mimi's Cafe and was one of the more popular restaurants outside of downtown Charleston. It was reported in November that Crew Carolina, the owners of the former East Bay Street location of the Boathouse Restaurant, would be taking over Mimi's and its doors closed in late December. The new seafood restaurant overlooking Ellis Creek had opened three weeks ago after a rush of renovations were carried out to get it up and running quickly.
Business was brisk and was showing increases week to week, said Batt Humphreys, communications director for Crew Carolina.
"We are all somewhat dazed by this turn of events," Humphreys said. "We've been very excited since the opening. Customers were excited about both the new look of the restaurant and the new menu."

Crew Carolina is the managing company for the Boathouse at Breach Inlet, the Boathouse on Ellis Creek, Carolina's Restaurant, Carolina Catering and Simply Southern Products. The company entered an agreement to acquire the Harbor View Road property in late 2008. The new restaurant had 38 employees.
Crew Carolina began working on renovations in January to bring the feel of the Boathouse decor and flavors to James Island. Substantial interior work had been done bringing the nautical feel and rich wooden interior to Ellis Creek, similar to that of the sister restaurant at Breach Inlet. Finishing work on a deck side bar and seating was to be complete by this weekend.
"This weekend was what we were waiting for," Humphreys said. "The weather was suppose to be warmer and Food and Wine weekend was going to bring what we felt was the first real launch weekend of the season. Now we'll have to pause to see what we can rebuild from the ruins."

best thing that could have happened before someone got killed. They had no parking. Customers and employess were parking along a very narrow shoulder along the road. It was very dangerous. Someone was going to be killed. Highway dept. put no parking signs up along the road between the eatery and the bridge. people were still parking between the signs. Some people were parking on the other side of the river and walking all the way back. I hope they do not allow them to reopen. the property is not big enough to support the number of people eating there. It out grew it's location. It's a dangerous traffic hazard!!!!

The timing is indeed very intriguing. The suspicious timing of an incident like this has also been found in the Trawler restaurant fires on Shem Creek. Also, sandnateater provides some interesting information about the dangerous parking. Didn't the restaurant owners anticipate possible parking problems? Good grief, the East Bay location always had a crowded parking lot.
Ever since the fire that was caused by overheated washing machines that washed the cloth napkins at Trawler and other restaurants, most eating establishments in Chas went to the paper napkins. I know for a fact that The Boathouse used paper napkins, so that cannot be the culprit in this case.
Regardless, I hope that Crew Carolina can rebuild The Boathouse on this location and get underway again. However, they need to consider better parking, if what sandnateater says is true.

Mimi's popularity always mystified me. Great setting, mediocre food, parking-a nightmare.
As already pointed out, a lot of restaurant fires seem to have very serendipitous timing for the owners... maybe they'll raise it up and fit parking underneath?

For those of you who are quick to jump on the "conspiracy theory" of insurance fraud, I would suggest you understand who you are talking about. If you knew the owners of this company, you would know they are not quick to take the easy way out and their drive to succeed would never be sueded by minor insurance proceeds. Shame on you all for your ignorant assumptions.
Secondly, my deepest sympathies to all the staff. May the rebuild be swift and successful!

Crew Carolina is company of integrity that has been an important presence in this area. They are respectable people with quality restaurants and catering. Also, I want to add that I live off Harborview and drive it multiple times a day. The place has been absolutely packed nightly for the last 3 weeks! Its not likely they were having financial trouble or fears.

I had not had a chance to eat there(had planned to go this weekend!) but they seem to have had great crowds from the minute they opened. Suggesting that someone has torched their business to make an insurance claim is libel per se. It's not something you should say unless you can prove it.
The endless, unending obsession with parking and traffic is tiresome. Walmart has a huge parking lot, but we hardly consider it a memorable part of our community. It's no accident that people seek out places with inadequate parking to dine, socialize and entertain themselves. The landscape of wide, high speed roads and parking lots is an ugly, alienating hell.
Hopefully, when the private automobile dies and this rebuilt restaurant has a nice bus stop with frequent service, devoting huge parts of the landscape to asphalt for immobile automobiles will be an unhappy memory. Has anyone considered how ugly the place would have been with a huge parking lot which would have been nearly empty a lot of the time.
The car can't die soon enough. Gas is going to be $5 again and a Chevy Volt is going to cost 40k, if GM survives. The age of the car ended last summer.

I have eaten at every Boathouse restaurant that they have opened and have had a great dining experience at each of them. I didn't get a chance to eat at this one, and was thinking I would have a chance in the next few weeks.
I can see where parking is a major problem for this restaurant, but it was also a problem when Mimi's was there as well. I'm not sure what the solution would be, but they have valet parking, so the customers aren't just wondering around in the road. The valet parks the car and walks along the side of the road back to the restaurant. It is no more dangerous than having people fish off the bridge in the same spot, which they are frequently doing.
I hope they can have it back up and running soon.

Agreed that Charleston has had its share of failing restaurants suddenly igniting, but this Boathouse fire doesn't fit the M.O. Here was a very successful restaurant with a very strong following from their previous locations. All of us who like the "old" Boathouse were looking forward to visiting the new venue. They had just spent thousands in their upgrades and had only been opened for three weeks at their new location. Way too soon to tell of its success. Doesn't fit. I don't think this was intentional at all.
March 5, 2009 at 11:55 a.m. ( permalink | suggest removal )
bribetaker (anonymous) says...
I also doubt it was intentional, they were successful and the company has been in the area for many, many years. Companies with an established history want to be here in the future. I also would be looking at the recent electrical overhaul. Remember when RB's was being renovated several years ago, it burned almost to the ground because of a fire from a tar roof job. Stuff happens and unlike what some you believe, every business person is not a crook.

goose,
you are comparing apple and oranges.
the people fishing on the bridge are sitting on a raised cement sidewalk and are not walking back and forth on the shoulder edge of the road. They stay put in one area.
Every time boat house staff or customer parks a car on the shoulder they have to step out into the street to walk back along the shoulder to the boat house.
It's dangerous and to defend the practice is irresponsible.
To say these people who own this place are upstanding good people of high morals and standards and would not burn their place down and care about people.....but they don't care enough about people to allow their staff and customers to risk their lives to work or patronize their place?
seems a little contradictory.

All I have to say is Mimis parking was not this bad and the owners putting up a split fencing was making it worse for those traveling this road. That is an extremely bad curve and to put up a fence like that cause people to have to pretty much come to a stop to turn in. It was obvious the parking was a problem for them to add no parking signs. The people fishing from the bridge are not fishing late at night and walking down the road like patrons of this restaurant nor the poor employees.
This was a major safety concern. I think some more creative measures needed to be taken as well as more parking citations needed to be address for the patrons who just ignored the signs.
If they rebuild I hope that they will consider the parking problems and the safety concerns that the community has for this establishment. Traveling this road several times a day and crazy hours for my line of work. It really concerned me coming through there with people walking down the road getting out vehicles and walking that bridge late at night.
Bottom line is that there was a major increase in traffic and parking problems since they open. People did not complain this much when it was Mimis.

To Firemike,
Not trying to start a fight, I'm asking a serious question. Regarding sprinklers, let's assume the place didn't have any and assuming the fire did start in the kitchen like the article said. I would think it would be hard to get a sprinkler system to work in a kitchen environment where it can get over 100 degrees and be smokey.
March 5, 2009 at 1:57 p.m. ( permalink | suggest removal )
firemike (anonymous) says...
Thank you for posing a good question bribetaker. Sprinklers work off of heat (not smoke like the movies show). Theirs a little glass bulb that is full of fluid that expands when heat from a fire hits it (older sprinkler use a solder link that melts). The fluid boils and breaks the bulb letting the water come out. There are different colored bulbs on sprinkler heads because the colors indicate the breaking temperature. Red = 155 Deg. F, Yellow = 175 Deg. F, Green = 200 Deg. F, Blue = 265 Deg. F. In kitchens sprinkler contractors install 200 Deg. sprinklers so the heads don't go off by mistake. The heads only go off where the fire is (not like the movies where they all go off).

Why didn't their alarm system work? Oh also why didn't the hood system work in the kitchen? Who installed it? I've seen these systems work in kitchens and they have always put out the fire under the hood. Sounds like someone installed a hood system incorrectly. I'm no expert but most restaurants don't burn to the ground because there hoods help suppress the fire before it gets out of hand.

Thanks for the info FireMike.
To those questioning the hoods, the alarm was answered at 1:16 am, they certainly weren't cooking meals for the public. The restaurant was obviously closed and depending on how long it takes them to clean up, the place could have been completely desserted. If the staff were still around, they may have been cooking some crew food. But if they were still there, I think they would have been able to answer the quesion of how the fire started and the article would have stated that. I'm still betting on a problem with the rennovation work.

Goose you are right about the fishermen not teleport there but there may be as many as 3 cars at any given time with fishing not 20 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ cars parked on the side of road with loads of people getting out to go eat at a restaurant and having to maneuver around many cars down the road to get to the establishment. Plus you cant say that if someone had gotten killed or seriously hurt that this restaurant owner was not going to get sued. I think people have the safety concerns in hand here with that many cars parked on the side of a busy busy road and for those who disagree with that it has caused more traffic problems through that stretch since they have open you must not come through there as often as the ones who have concerns or I should say had concerns. The bottom line is that this parking problem was a major accident waiting to happen. I really hope that if they rebuild that they will consider that problem for all of the concerned citizens of the community who would like to support them but will not if they continue to create such problems.

I too, was absolutely shocked by some of these comments. I worked for Crew Carolina--it was a great company to work for, made up of hard-working people who put their heart and soul into all they do.
Nothing was more reflective of that than the latest incarnation of the Boathouse on Ellis Creek. It was a beautiful renovation, with a staff and management who had worked day and night to rebuild, paint, and make that restaurant what it became.
It was wonderful to see a LOCALLY OWNED, home-grown establishment thriving, in these dismal economic times. The staff was incredibly attentive and clearly (and rightfully so!) proud of the work they put into it, and the food was fantastic.
Shame on all of you who suggested that this was in any way intentional, and for using this forum to air your grievances. This was a sad day for the Stoney family, and the family at Crew Carolina, and perhaps it would be appropriate to acknowledge the (temporary) loss of a local business and the jobs of it's dedicated employees.

Our family has always known the owners of the Boathouse and Carolinas to be ethical people. They are truly devastated by this fire. They are trying to assist the employees in finding shift work at their other restaurants until this one can be rebuilt. They take pride in their business and have always felt that the quality was representative of their integrity.
Please do not make negative assumptions about this situation. This as an accident, pure and simple and sadly!
