Sanford admits additional encounters with Chapur, 'crossed lines' with other women

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford said Tuesday that he "crossed lines" with a handful of women other than his mistress - but never had sex with them.

Update

The governor wrote a $2,969.58 check today and submitted it to the state Treasurer to reimburse the Department of Commerce for the travel, lodging and meal expenses from the June 2008 Argentina trip.

The governor said he "never crossed the ultimate line" with anyone but Maria Belen Chapur, the Argentine at the center of a scandal that has derailed his once-promising political career.

"This was a whole lot more than a simple affair, this was a love story," Sanford said. "A forbidden one, a tragic one, but a love story at the end of the day."

During an emotional interview at his Statehouse office with The Associated Press on Tuesday, Sanford said Chapur is his soul mate but he's trying to fall back in love with his wife.

He said that during the encounters with other women he "let his guard down" with some physical contact but "didn't cross the sex line." He wouldn't go into detail.

Sanford, 49, said the casual encounters happened outside the U.S. while he was married but before he met Chapur, on trips to "blow off steam" with male friends.

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford collects his thoughts as he admits to The Associated Press more encounters with his Argentine mistress than he previously has disclosed, in his office Tuesday in Columbia.

Sanford also admitted he saw Chapur more times than previously disclosed, including what was to be a farewell meeting in New York chaperoned by a spiritual adviser soon after his wife found out about the affair.

After that disclosure, South Carolina Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Henry McMaster said Tuesday he has asked the State Law Enforcement Division to review all of Sanford's travel records to see if any laws have been broken.

Sanford said he was pleased that SLED would investigate. "There's been a lot of speculation and innuendo on whether or not public moneys were used to advance my admitted unfaithfulness," he said in a statement. "To be very clear: no public money was ever used in connection with this. We believe the best way to put those questions to rest once and for all is for SLED to ask these questions, and we plan on cooperating fully."

Sanford described five meetings with Chapur over the past year, including two romantic, multi-night stays with her in New York before they met there again intending to break up.

He said he saw her two other times, including their first meeting in 2001 at an open-air dance spot in Uruguay.

"There was some kind of connection from the very beginning," he told The Associated Press, though he said neither that meeting nor a 2004 coffee date in New York during the Republican National Convention were romantic. Sanford had been considered a potential 2012 presidential contender before the scandal broke last week.

His interview was the first disclosure of any liaisons with Chapur in the United States and contradicted a public confession last week during which he admitted to a total of five encounters over their eight-year relationship.

He previously announced he would reimburse the state for money spent during a government trip to Brazil and Argentina in June 2008 when he saw Chapur. It was then, he said, that their relationship became physical, and the e-mails they'd exchanged for years reflected their anguish over what they had done.

"Now I am frightened," he told the AP, describing his state of mind at the time. "It was before safe. But now it's not safe. We gotta put the genie back in the bottle."

He insists no public money was used for any other meetings with her.

He saw Chapur again in mid-June of this year, visiting Argentina without telling his staff he was going to be out of the country. He instead led them to believe he was hiking on the Appalachian Trail.

By the time he returned to a puzzled public, staff and family, his public image and emotional state had unraveled. He admitted the affair at a rambling press conference.

Now Sanford is attempting to salvage his personal and professional lives. He and wife Jenny, parents of four sons, say they are trying to reconcile their 20-year marriage but have not been sharing the same house for several weeks. Jenny Sanford found out about the relationship in January when she discovered a letter the governor had written to his mistress.

She did not immediately return a message seeking comment Tuesday, but she told The Associated Press in an interview Friday that her husband had repeatedly sought permission to visit Chapur.

"I said absolutely not. It's one thing to forgive adultery; it's another thing to condone it," she said.

The governor said he met Chapur in Punta Del Este, Uruguay, in 2001 after his final term in Congress and before his first term as governor. He said the two struck up an e-mail correspondence after meeting on a dance floor - a chance encounter during which he counseled her into the night about her failing marriage.

For the next seven-plus years, Sanford said, the two exchanged messages, sometimes sporadically.

They met in New York two more times in 2008: two nights in Manhattan in September and three nights in the Hamptons in November. Each time, Sanford claims he flew coach, paid for it himself, paid for the hotels in cash and told his staff he was reachable by cell phone.

"At that point I was very careful, everything was paid for in cash," Sanford said. "And you won't find a credit card record."

In early 2009, after Jenny Sanford discovered the affair, the couple went into counseling. She has told The Associated Press that he asked her several times to visit the mistress and she refused.

But the governor claims he wanted to end the affair in person and, with his wife's permission, went to New York with a "trusted spiritual adviser" serving as chaperone. The three went to church and dinner together and parted ways the same night.

But he visited Chapur again in Argentina on June 18, the trip that brought the whole affair to light.

The Governor has completely destroyed any capacity he had to lead the state in a time of economic crisis. This man wouldn't be welcome to do a ribbon cutting at a 7-11 now. He obviously can't do anything about the state's sinking economy.

If Republican's want government to fail, they have certainly made a good start of it by producing a Governor who has failed in every possible way and a Lt. Governor, nominated and elected by their own party that they say is unfit to serve.

This man needs to resign, file an action in Family Court to see his sons with counseling and salvage what he can of his life. He needs to pick one woman or the other, if either of them has any use for him after he is out of office. How much humiliation must the state endure? Is there no limit.

Dear Governor Sanford - I'm hoping this might be helpful to you the next time you want to end an affair:

#1 - Don't travel to see them
#2 - Don't call them
#3 - Don't write letters to them
#4 - When you've met chatting on the internet - break up
on the internet (it will save you time and money)
#5 - Don't travel with your "esteemed spiritual advisor" to
have dinner & drinks with the person you're having an
affair with. Were you wanting to end the affair? or get
approval from him on the "next" Mrs Sanford?

If you want to continue the affair - disregard all of the above.

Seriously, everyone, this isn't about an affair or a political party. This is about habitual lying, not only to his family but to the state. He lied about needing to go to Argentina just so he could see his girlfriend on our dime. After confessing the affair, he immediately lied about how many times he went down there.

An example of something that could have happened is a serious accident at the Savannah nuclear site. A prison riot. The things governors have to make quick decisions about. It's good to know the location of the Governor; he is Commander in Chief of the National Guard with the authority to declare martial law. But, he lied about that too.

FRAUD ALERT! FRAUD ALERT! SANFRAUD ALERT!

Mark Sanford admitted Tuesday that he saw his Argentine mistress more times than previously disclosed, including what was to be a farewell meeting in New York chaperoned by a spiritual adviser soon after his wife found out about the affair.

...the governor described five meetings with Maria Belen Chapur over the past year, including two romantic, multi-night stays with her in New York before they met there again intending to break up.

He said he met her two other times - their first meeting in 2001 at an open-air dance spot in Uruguay and a coffee date in New York in 2004 during the Republican National Convention. He said neither time was romantic.

It was the first disclosure of any liaisons with Chapur in the United States and contradicted a public confession last week during which Sanford admitted to a total of five encounters over their eight-year relationship.

He previously announced he would reimburse the state for money spent during a government trip to Brazil and Argentina in June 2008 when he saw Chapur. He insists no public money was used for any other meetings with her.

He saw Chapur again in mid-June of this year, visiting Argentina without telling his staff he was going to be out of the country. He instead led them to believe he was hiking on the Appalachian Trail.

The governor said he met Chapur in Punta Del Este, Uruguay, in 2001 after his final term in Congress and before his first term as governor. He said the two struck up an e-mail correspondence after meeting on a dance floor - a chance encounter during which he counseled her into the night about her failing marriage.

You can say what you want about Jenny but at the end of the day she was home taking care of her family while daddy was chasing skirts all over the world. It does not have anything to do with what he was or was not getting at home. I can probably guess that she had plenty of needs that were not being met ... don't ya think??? It has to do with someone not knowing how to handle that much power ... he is a narcissist. He thinks he is more than what he is ... entitled more by his position.

Does anyone on here think for a minute that had he not gotten caught he would now be back home trying to be a good husband and father. I wonder if he ever gave a second thought to how this will affect his own children. What kind of example is he setting for them and what kind of husband's and fathers are they going to end up being with him as an example? His press conferences make me want to vomit. Do you think his kids want all their friends hearing him ramble on about this so publicly!!!

He is not concerned with anything in this state except for the amount of power that is to be gained or lost in the wake of a huge, selfish mess. If his "spiritual advisor" was worth a toot he would have never advised him to choose the State of South Carolina over his own marriage and family ... much less joined he and his mistress on trip to NY ... PLEASE!!!!!

CALLING REPORTERS EVERYWHERE ... find out who this mysterious "spiritual advisor" is. I love to hear what he has to say ... or at the very least find out what his credentials are and report him to his medical or religous board for some sort of malpractice! UGH!!!

Mark is obviously enormously intelligent. His positions on political policy questions are largely or even entirely correct 99%+ of the time.

He is clearly a man with a considerable libido. Common sense tells us this is true of anyone that has fathered four children.

So all this is a shame. Crossing the line is black and white. As long as it doesn't get physical, no actual line is crossed.

So, in conclusion, Mark is using his immense intelligence and communications skills to intellectualize and confuse the issue because he is cornered. This is a typical reaction of most people so the holier than thou crowd need only look in the mirror to see someone who would at least behave in a similar manner in an identical situation even though most of them lack the intellectual firepower Mark clearly possesses.

However, he made a huge mistake. The bottom line is that he needs to go regardless of other considerations because WE THE PEOPLE demand a certain moral standard of people in his position even though many of us can't meet the same standard ourselves. I speak as a huge fan of the man who knows him personally and has worked on one of his campaigns.

Numba10 - It looks like you have nothing to say yourself, aside from telling everyone else that their opinions are pointless. Now that we've heard YOUR opinion (more than once), I think it'd be nice if people could have a mature discussion without your obsessive comments. Speaking of which, I don't understand what your angle is on repetitively posting:

"So you are bi lingual--cow and english"
"rumors blah blah blah"
"Lets face it you have nothing usefull to say"
"next discussing rumors is called gossip---finally name calling is a waste of time---Ya'll berate back now ya hear"
"vmira--and you are a shining example of someone with nothing to say that did finish the 6th grade"
"vmira---I must be worth your time that is twice you directed at me rather than the topic--oh and thank you for showing how important what I say is to you----yuckle chuckle"
"Blast shield deployed!!!!!"

Do you have some kind of unrequited love for Sanford, or are you simply having a bad day where you're trying to pick a fight? Or maybe you're trying to convince us of your views somehow by being insulting and immature? Not a very good tactic. If any of the above are correct, or perhaps it's something else, chiming in on a Newspaper comment board isn't going to make you feel much better (or look any more convincing).

There are ways to have a mature discussion and share your opinion, without being belittling and childish.

Btw... that second to last quote I mentioned from you is not flattering on your part, considering almost ALL of the statements you made where directed toward vmira.

It shows how important his statements are to you.

Part I of II:
-----------------
After being devestated by a man whom I have held in high regard for his sticking to his principles with matters of government (at least), I wanted to put forth a few points:

1. Unlike the liberals, conservatives, usually, do not circle the wagons when one of their own has fallen. As a result, Mr. Sanford will have calls from both sides of the aisle for his resignation. Unfortunately, some on his own "side" will do this for political gain.

2. However, I would like to know where all these principled conservatives were on election day when they voted for Socialism-Lite (McCain). Now, I understand some voted on principle like I did for a third party candidate. So, when you call for his resignation based on principle, I will agree with you. When these other conservatives who caved in on election day call for his resignation based on "principle", I ask, what principle are you talking about?

3. The point of his abandoning his post to me is a mere stretch. Do others mean to tell me that our Lt. Gov does not have the ability or bravery to step in if the governor cannot be located? Can he not act as Gov until the Gov can return? The SC Constitution, Art IV, Sect 11 states:"...In the case of the temporary disability of the Governor and in the event of the temporary absence of the Governor from the State, the Lieutenant Governor shall have full authority to act in an emergency." Maybe he only knows how to hit the cable TV circuit!

aviodont (anonymous) says...

Part II of II
(CONTINUED FROM ABOVE)
------------------------------------------
4. The Gov has severely demoralized conservatives by his actions. I am sure he is suffering for this internally. He let the people of this Great State down by his actions. We the People placed our confidence in him to fight the legislature and turn them back. I feel, in effect he still owes us this. Considering the current state of affairs, how can he best deliver on his promise to us? Would that be by handing over the reins of power to the Lt. Gov? Perhaps he needs to throw himself in front of We the People and say, "I have done wrong and need to step down on principle. But to continue the fight, I endorse Mr. ABC to run in 2010 for Governor so that he may continue the good fight for you the people who I have so regretfully let down by my indiscretion".

5. For myself, my slate is not clean enough to throw the first stone. I am a sinner. Perhaps your slates are clean enough? Morally, he has no right to the high ground. As a politician, he is still a good leader. Yes, I understand the logic of those who say "If he will lie to his wife, he will lie to us." However, to me the definition of a politician is "if his mouth is moving, he's lying". Even with his fall from grace, he is probably the best we have right now. More proof? When all the politicians (left and right) hate you, you are doing something right (by the people).

6. In the end, God will judge him. I will pray for him.

I hope these words provide a different insight.

Jenny should have filed for divorce (today) the minute Mark's "crossed lines" interview appeared on the AP website. What a low life cad. He has the nerve to say "Chapur is his soulmate but he is trying to fall back in love with his wife." This tells anyone that marriage has already ended in his eyes.
In another article it stated the governor met Ms. Chapur "on a dance floor" in 2001. Well, pardon me people, but what is a married man doing a dance floor in a foreign country with someone other than his wife? Sanford is one of the notorious governor SC ever hand, God don't like ugly. This is why state of SC is a joke to this country. As a leader of sc and a family man, a true man won't leave his sons and family on father day, spend republican taxpayer's money and travel to Argentina to see MC for his personal satisfaction. Then lied to the State of SC that he was going on a hiking trip in the Appalachian Mountains. Now we know why he didn't want to sign the stimulus package. He was more concerned about how to stimulate travel to Argentina than stimulate jobs for the
people of SC. This is the same man who wants to closed USC campuses in rural areas because the state is spending too much of money. But it's okay for Stanford to take taxpayer's money and spen it on trips to Argentina for his personal satisfaction. You Figure!!! The bottom line: This should open the eyes of his republican party, that Sanford only care about Sanford and not the state of SC.
If you republicans can't see through this and wants this person as a leader for the state of SC, then you are as BADD as I thought.

Don't make an emotional investment in these people. Don't vote for anyone who talks about family values. You don't want them in your bedroom; keep them out of everyone else's. There are pure political issues that you should be voting for or against. Family values need to be taught in church and in homes and kept out of politics.

It's all falling into place now. He never broke up w/Maria. He left her promising he'd be back in 18 mos., separated from his wife and still a status-laden former gov. That's why Maria's mentioned first in his apology. Now he has to assure her she is his soulmate and he is in no way in love w/his wife because the other women are about to be revealed - and revealing!-so he's gotta cover: for Maria-not Jenny, not "those" boys, and not SC. To him, it's all about Maria and Mark, eternally beloved. ( Barf!)

Apparently Sanfords marriage has gone missing. Who he sleeps with is sort of beside the point. He is able to run the state for another 18 months better than who is in the wings. What are y'all doing defending a guy that presides over an education system that ranks 50th out of fifty states, an unemployment rate that, today, is only slightly higher than Michigan and has sucked for the last seven years before this and routinely embarasses our state with his goofy ideology that totally ignores reality. Sanford says he 'crossed lines' in marriage

Details emerge from 1995 trip

...information surfaced that he had a romantic interlude as early as 1995 on an official congressional trip to Chile.

But people familiar with one such encounter said the governor had a brief romance with an American businesswoman in June 1995 while he was traveling in Latin America on a congressional trade mission trip.

...the then-freshman congressmen met a woman during a dinner hosted by the U.S. Embassy in Santiago, Chile, and later arranged a private, romantic encounter with her while in Chile. The woman was led to believe that Mr. Sanford was unmarried, and when she found out later that he had a wife, she had no further contact with him, the sources said.

Congressional records show that as a congressman in 1995, Mr. Sanford traveled to Argentina, Brazil and Chile from May 30 to June 5 on a trade mission

Records show that Mr. Sanford did not take his wife on the trade mission, although other members of the committee did -each paying separately for their expenses.

For your entertainment, a friend sent me this from one of our state's finest. And we really wonder why the fools we have in our General Assembly have not called for SanFRAUD to step down.

"Dear Friends,

This past week has been one of turmoil for our state. The actions of Governor Mark Sanford have shocked and saddened us all. While I believe that it is far too early to speculate on how the dust will settle on our very real strife, I do want all of you to know that I hear your comments, emails and letters and concerns.

Governor Mark Sanford has broken the public trust with his actions and has the burden now of answering for those actions. Even though his press conference came about as a result of lack of communication with other state officials and staff and the media attention it brought, he has taken responsibility for what transpired. I do not condone what our governor has done but feel that any actions from this point forward must be reasonable and responsible and based on fact.

It will be incumbent upon the governor to be transparent, completely open and honest, as the facts and details are examined.

When you, the People, elect us to office, we swear an oath to uphold and defend our state's constitution and laws. I take that oath very seriously and expect others in government, especially our governor, to do the same. You should expect no less.

That said, I do also believe very strongly in the power of prayer and the ability of sinners to receive forgiveness from their God, but also from their community. None of us is without sin and Governor Mark Sanford has apologized. His actions from this point forward will demonstrate his dedication and commitment to rectifying his mistakes and remaining true to his state & citizens, his wife & children, and his God. Those actions combined with the facts as they are brought to light will guide where we as a state go from this point forward.

I would ask that you continue to keep Governor Sanford and his family and our entire state in your thoughts and prayers. We are a compassionate caring state and I know that just as we weather all other types of storms, we will come through this turmoil stronger and more dedicated to all of the principles that we South Carolinian's hold dear.

Here if you need me,

Does anyone remember when the State Ethcis Commission gave a pass to SanFRAUD's brother-in-law, the former mayor of Beaufort? The former mayor (he was forced to resign after he was caught by the SEC for insider trading) was accused of trying to bribe a councilman in exchange for a vote.
