The State Ports Authority buoyed its prospects of riding out the rough seas of its inner turmoil by announcing a promising new leader on Tuesday.
Shipping line executive Jim Newsome, 53, will start as the SPA's president and chief executive officer on Sept. 1.
He signed a three-year contract Tuesday for a $300,000 annual salary, or $36,000 more than what former Chief Executive Officer Bernard S. Groseclose Jr. was paid.

Roper St. Francis Healthcare, which has partnered with Charleston Hematology Oncology Associates, broke ground Wednesday on a $19 million cancer center near its Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in West Ashley.
The planned three-story, 76,000-square-foot center, which could see its first patients in the fall of 2010, will feature a patient resource library and a boutique that sells wigs and prostheses.

Subaru is returning to Charleston.
Local car dealer Robert Crews, who owns Saturn of Charleston, announced Wednesday he will bring the Subaru dealership to a site beside his Saturn store on Rivers Avenue in North Charleston.
It will be called Subaru of Charleston.
Former Subaru dealer Johnny Dangerfield closed the area's only such dealership in March.
