Couple killed in crash identified
By Andy Paras
Authorities have identified a North Charleston couple who were killed Sunday when a driver fled a traffic stop and crashed into their car.
Charleston County Coroner Rae Wooten pronounced Johnny Vice, 63, dead at the scene at 7:10 p.m. His wife, Betty, 63, died later at the Medical University Hospital, Wooten said.
Authorities say Johnny Vice was driving a 2001 Cadillac when the car was struck by a 2005 Chrysler 300 that attempted to elude a traffic stop at Moultrie Street and Ashley Avenue.
An officer stopped the Chrysler for speeding at President and Moultrie streets at 6:52 p.m., said Charles Francis, Charleston Police public information officer.
As the officer walked toward the vehicle, the car took off, Francis said.
Three black men inside the Chrysler got out of the car following the crash and ran. At least one of them was picked up by a late-model Ford Expedition or Cadillac Escalade that stopped at the scene, Francis said.
No arrests have been made as of Monday morning. Francis said the driver was wearing shorts and an army-green shirt. Another wore blue jeans and a white tank top. A description of the third man was not available.
The Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

this is a horribly sad story. two innocent people are dead. when these people are caught they need to have a murder or manslaughter charge brought against them. also how were they able to get away after wrecking, shouldn't more cops have been around to assist?

Well first off my condolences to the family. now to the crime. The suspects are the same ones we read and see on the news day in and dayout. Again until truth in sentencing is put into place for good, this and other types of crimes against the people will occur.

Green123, this was a traffic stop, not a pursuit. Anyway, many people complain if they see more than one police vehicle at a traffic stop. Too many cops on the scene, not enough cops on the scene - lots of armchair quarterbacking by those who have never worked in law enforcement (but have watched a lot of TV).
I appreciate the very difficult job our police and emergency workers do. When these thugs are arrested, we will probably read that they were on probation or out on bond, thanks to our judicial system.

desspec,
I read this article when there was only one comment on it, regarding the wrong car. Indeed, at the time, the article was incorrect and the poster was right. However, as is so often the case with this website, the story was edited AFTER the poster (Eastoaster) pointed out the inaccurate information. If the P&C staff would run these stories by an alert editor before posting them, they would not have to rely on the general public to point out the indiscrepancies in what is written.
Don't get me wrong - I definitely enjoy reading the newspaper for free online. However, this is a site that is earning money from advertisements based on the number of visitors to the site. Therefore, since our visiting the site ultimately leads to more revenue for the P&C, I believe that we deserve to have the stories edited before being posted.
So, in short, this was NOT a case of "One poster (who) can't read."

Agreed wonderdog, no need to place blame on the law enforcement officers. They did their job by attempting to stop the vehicle. It's not the officers fault that they wouldn't stop. Also, you can't place blame on the officers for what the judicial system does to the offenders. The officers' hands are tied once it gets to a certain point.

The intersection of Ashley and Moultrie is very dangerous. Traffic on Moultrie has a stop sign, but on Ashley does not. Drivers often assume the opposite and run the stop sign on Moultrie. This is a terrible tragedy. I hope the City will consider an all-way stop with better signage at Moultrie and Ashley.

As a deputy in middle Georgia we have a policy on vehicle pursuit. When the chase becomes dangerous and the public is put in harms way we terminate the chase and get them another day. I would hope Charleston County, city of Charleston and North Charleston have a SOP in place to prevent tragedies from occurring and innocent people losing their life. As a deputy for twenty seven years I was fortunate not to have anyone killed while a pursuing a vehicle. My prayers go out to the family.

This was NOT a pursuit, so a pursuit policy doesn't even apply here.
The thugs sped away from the officer after being pulled over and hit the other car within about 2 blocks.
