SULLIVANS ISLAND - First lady Jenny Sanford says she warned her husband not to see his mistress before a trip last week and was shocked he met her in Argentina anyway.

Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press that she discovered Gov. Mark Sanford's affair in January when she found a letter from him to the other woman. She said she told him to end the affair and he agreed to.

She said that when the governor told her recently he needed time alone to write, she specifically warned him not to visit the mistress. She was shocked to learn this week that he'd gone to Argentina to do just that.

Jenny Sanford says she stayed with her husband while their four sons finished the school year in Columbia before leaving him for their coastal home on Sullivans Island.

I honestly feel bad for Mrs. Sanford and the kids. I hope they make it through.

This could and should have been handled more privately. Gov. Sanford has been so tacky with all of this, dragging his wife and children through the mud and making the whole fiasco so public. She should step out of the relationship; the children do not need to be subjected to all of this. Best luck to Mrs. Sanford, whatever decisions she makes.

Suzie, I agree. I guess he figured if he did it in a public forum, his "healing" could begin. That just made it worse IMO. So far, Mrs Sanford seems to be doing ok. Sanford, I hope it was worth it.

Let's not miss the point here that "Jenny Sanford told the Associated Press on Friday..." If she wants to be left alone, wants to handle the situation in private, she should not tell the Associated Press anything. It amazes me when someone voluntarily speaks with the press, even sharing the kids report cards, and then pleads for privacy.

Sailaway ~ I completely agree. Jenny seems to be spilling a lot of information to the media with her so called "wanting to keep things private". BS

I don't feel sorry for her ... she is one of the rudest people I have ever met in my life. She is fake, hipocritical and just plain superficial. No wonder he found someone else.

Geez ChasCarolinaGirl.. almost sounds like you are another of Sanford's jilter lovers, and you blame Jenny for that.

Get over it, Jenny is not the Gov. Jenny and her children are the victims of this situation, and ummm should have been apologized to first at the press conference, not the mistress.

My guess is that Mrs. Sanford was the one who sent the e-mails to the State to teach Gov. Sanford a lesson.

ChasCarolinaGirl (anonymous) says...

Oh Tina, of course it wouldn't take long for someone to come back with that sort of comment. Blame her for that? No, I was just stating the obvious about how rude she is.

The children are the victims and if Jenny was such a victim, she shouldn't be feeding the media. It only makes the situation much worse and therefore reflects on the children. I mean, really? One day they will read about how their poor poor mother couldn't keep her mouth shut about their private matters.

Re the critiques of Jenny Sanford's actions: Until you have been completely humiliated, not just publicly but internationally, don't even pretend to give advice. Maybe she's a harridan. Maybe she's had affairs too. I have no idea. What I do know is her husband has betrayed her and their marriage vows. He has also shown just what he thinks of his constituents--we are nothing more than pocket change to him.
He needs to resign because, as one state representative said yesterday, "There is no reason for him to stay."
I wish he'd be a man, step down and work on reconciling with his family.
Mrs. Sanford, my heart goes out to you.

She may be a victim, but obviously a very ticked off one.

Understandably, she probably wants to do a lot worse considering she's been lied to & cheated on.

While her sniping at him in the press sounds like a tactic to do before getting divorced, I'm impressed with how she's not putting up with his crap or letting herself look like a chump.

In my opinion I feel sorry for Gov. Sanford for putting up with Jenny for all these years...we all know she wears the pants in the family...it's very obvious. I think he found "true love" for the first time in his life and someone who truly loved, admired and respected him. Not someone who constantly told him what to do, where to go and how to run the Gov's office. It's really a sad situation. I say, "you without sin, cast the first stone." There's not 1 person who is perfect and those that "jump on the bandwagon" to critize someone who makes mistakes should look in the mirror. My mistake, your mistake and others mistakes may not be the same but we are all human beings and we make them. When a man (or woman) strays from their relationship then something is wrong...it wasn't that great in the first place. Gov. Sandford is a man - he's not God - and I am praying for him and his children...and yes, even his wife whom I have no respect...that they will all heal. Life is short and we should all be happy each day...I say if Gov. Sanford finds happiness with someone else he should go for it...why stay in a relationship just for children or any other reason. Children are stong and as long as they feel loved by both parents it really dosent matter if they live with one parent or both. (Just so you know, I am a female, married 44 years and I still have faith, believe in and respect Governor Sanford - my husband and I both voted for him and we would again if he ever ran for office.)

What comes next for Mark Sanford?

I see a potential trip to Charleston County family court in Mark's future. Unless of course he wants to return to his marriage and Jinny accepts him. I don't see any indication that Mark wants to return or that Jinny would be stupid enough to accept him. I always gave her credit for being the brains in that union.

There is obviously no future in public life as the wife of Mark Sanford and there went any potential hopes for a family political dynasty through Mark's sons. I don't doubt that the party may consider fielding her for public office later on-but she's always going to be sporting that political black eye from Mark. Oh well :

There is divorce or separate maintenance and support if they don't return to the marriage.

Whether or not Jinny wants separate maintenance and support would be academic. Mark's children would be entitled to it-and we all know how eager the family court is to pontificate "THE BEST INTEREST OF THE CHILDREN".

They can of course work out an agreement on those matters. However, for any such an agreement to be enforceable it would have to go through the family court.

If Jinny thinks she has any problems trusting Mark to independently live up to an agreement (LMAO), she hasn't seen the level of corruption that family court has sunk to.

I have personal experience on the issue of agreements and extrinsic fraud upon the court by officers of the court which I have already shared with this newspaper. Perhaps they may get around to doing a story on that given what is going on with the Sanford's.

Ya think?

ChasCarolinaGirl & realforsure,

I have to say that I agree with both of you. Reading the 2 articles published here regarding Jenny's conversation with the AP, it would seem like she's talking "at" the Governor through the reporter. If she's been the "pant wearer" throughout their marriage & he the passive one, it would explain a lot! I didn't say it made what he did right, only that it would explain some things. I'm wondering now if she tipped off Jake Knotts or whomever that he was "missing." It would make sense because the fuss about his whereabouts started Monday, the day after Father's Day. Of course she had every right to do so. Why would she add, after being asked if she knew where he was & saying no, that he missed Father's Day if she didn't want news of the affair to be public? I don't think I would have thought anymore about it after reading her full statement Wednesday if that would have been all that I'd heard/seen of/from her. In fact, after reading the statement, my initial thought was that she was truly a saint! In the couple of shots I've seen of her since the news broke, she's looked more than normal & I wondered how she kept it together so well & why she would stop her car to speak with reporters. She has taken every opportunity to say that she couldn't care less about his political career,as if she's reminding him through the media that he must give up the Governorship if he she's to allow him to come back to her. Now I've just read the 2 articles P&C posted about Jenny speaking with a reporter from the AP and she's given more details than mosst would have. The details aren't anyone else's business nor do her son's need to be subjected to them in the future. The other thing is that Governor Sanford was so genuinely, emotionally distraught during his press conference but he never said the relationship with Maria was over.

For all we know, the Governor could have been in a 20 year marriage with someone who ran things with an iron fist. Perhaps he really has, for the first time, found someone who truly loved him. Jenny might very well be feeling she's loosing control over him for the first time in 20 years and has resorted to desperate measures. Again, I'm not saying he handled things the right way, just that it might not be all that it initially seemed to be. Whatever it is/was, there's more to this than meets the eye! Who, in their right mind, is going to tell the press that your husband, who's just publicly admitted to having an affair, asked repeatedly if he could go visit his mistress? Why would he have asked her to do so? Because there's more to the story maybe and they both knew the marriage was over?

It does seem odd that he asked for permission from his wife to visit his lover. Did King David do that?

Children are what makes a man a father. To spend Father's Day committing adultery rather than with one's children is unconscionable.

If he stays in office, there will not longer be a requirement in America for our leaders to have a moral code. I hope we don't lose that in this country.

IT IS POSSIBLE THAT GOV. SANFORD LEFT THE LETTER IN HIS DESK FOR MRS. SANFORD TO FIND. MAYBE THIS WAS HIS WAY OF ENDING THE MARRIAGE. YOU CAN BE DIVORCED AND BE GOVENOR. I AM SURE HE DID NOT EXPECT IT GET SO MESSY. SHE PROBABLY WAS BEHIND ALL THE HUNTING HIM DOWN WHEN HE WAS MISSING. SINCE SHE IS INVOLVED IN HIS PUBLIC LIFE SHE KNEW EXACTLY WHO TO CALL TO GET THE BALL ROLLING. "HELL HATH NO FURY LIKE A WOMAN SCORNED". I KNOW A COUPLE OF WOMAN IN CHAS WHO WOULD GLADLY HAVE HELPED HER.
