Forget lemonade stands and dog-walking jobs. This summer's coolest job award goes to Ashley Hall's own Shelly Vohr.

Shelly, a rising eighth-grader, is interning this summer with her father, Neal Vohr, the interim club manager of Turks & Caicos Sporting Club at Ambergris Cay in the Caribbean. Shelly will be acting as Junior Ambassador of the Club.

This experience will further develop her interest in marine biology, she said. The internship will include working with campers during the summer Kid's Eco-Camp, where children of all ages are educated about environmental science.

Shelly also will maintain the equipment at the Environmental Learning Center while keeping an eye on the well-being of the center's aquarium. She will shadow the concierge team. And she'll help with the Millennium Seed Bank Collection, a project being done in collaboration with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

She has been in the Turks and Caicos Islands since May 26 and was scheduled to finish the internship and return June 18. Read her blog at www.coolestsummerjob.com.

Senior projects presented in May

On May 26, Ashley Hall students were asked to return to school after the week of their exams to view presentations of the senior projects. The girls were divided into several groups and sent all over campus to view the seniors' hard work.

Having decided their topics at the end of their junior year, the members of the senior class had been working on their projects all year long. After meticulous critiques were given, the projects were touched up and made ready to present.

Topics ranged from Claire Kruse's "The Art of Sign Language," to Adair Kerrison's conducting of the Red Choir, to Arden Hare's hip-hop performance and Lauren Luciano's art exhibit inside the "Bear Cave.'"

Younger students who had dreaded having to come back to school ended up thoroughly enjoying themselves and left with a greater respect for the Class of 2009.
