Sanford traveled to Argentina for taxpayer-funded trip

Gov. Mark Sanford was on a state-paid trip to Brazil and official state-paid meetings in Buenos Aires in June 2008 at the same time he met with his Argentine mistress, according to documents obtained today by The Post and Courier.

The documents from the state Commerce Department show that he attended business meetings in the days following his June 21 arrival, but that he flew down to Buenos Aires between June 25 and 27.

The itinerary shows seven meetings scheduled during that three-day period.

The trade delegation did not accompany the governor to the meetings in Argentina, but he was accompanied by a project manager from the South Carolina Department of Commerce, which is standard practice for meetings with public officials and prospective companies, a statement from Commerce Department spokeswoman Kara Borie said.

E-mails obtained by The State newspaper of Columbia between Sanford and his mistress, Maria, reference the trip. In an e-mail dated July, 4, 2008, Sanford confirmed the two had been together the previous week. ""You know that I miss you. Unbeleivably (sic) hard to imagine it has been a week."

She responded, "Have been thinking of you while watching the beautiful blue sea (a) great part of my day. and remembering with a great smile on my face, the time we have spent together."

Sanford responded to criticism of the Commerce Department trip late Thursday afternoon.

"As noted by the Department of Commerce, I attended a trade mission with the Department of Commerce last June. As the agenda notes, the mission was spent meeting with government and private business officials in both Brazil and Argentina. This trip was handled very professionally by the Department of Commerce, and I'm proud of their work there.

"However, while the purpose of this trip was an entirely professional and appropriate business development trip, I made a mistake while I was there in meeting with the woman who I was unfaithful to my wife with.

That has raised some very legitimate concerns and questions, and as such I am going to reimburse the state for the full cost of the Argentina leg of this trip," Gov. Sanford said.

More than $8,000 in taxpayer money was spent on Sanford's portion of the Brazil and Argentina trip, though it's unclear how much of that was for the trip to Argentina.

Knowing what we know about Andre, a parade would be too slow, Little A would probably prefer a drag (as in cars, not men dressed as women...what he does or who he hangs out with in his free time isn't my business) race. Of course, to suck up to old folks, he'd probably use a power chair to drive over, at least while the cameras were on.

Seriously, the thought of a Governor Bauer is the thing that scares me about a Sanford resignation. The up side, if there is one, is that we'd only have to live through 18 months of Andre as governor before we could dump him for someone hopefully more qualified.

Most of us don't have the luxury of working a job where we can get away with disappearing for days, shirking responsibilities, misappropriating company funds and property and engaging in morally dubious behavior on company time, Rgsno.

When we're all expected to live up to a certain standard, why shouldn't we be upset when our governor - an official elected on and lauded for his principles of family values, conservative principles and fiscal responsibility - engages in all of those behaviors?

Calling for Sanford's head on a platter is taking things too far, but we as citizens have a right to expect our elected officials to face the consequences for their professional misconduct and hypocrisy.

I've said all along that I really like Mark Sanford. I think that he is/was a great governor and an asset to our state. In the wake of President "Spend Like There's No Tomorrow" Obama, a thrifty leader certainly is refreshing and I would have voted on him for president in 2012 had he run. However, had I disappeared from my job to run up to Motel 6 and try and hook something up, I would come back expecting to be fired - much less running off to South America. I hate to say it, but I cannot see how this situation is any different. Had he done this on his own time and money, I wouldn't feel this way, but this really changes the way that I look at this whole matter. This morning I was standing up against co-workers who were calling for his head - I can't say that I feel the same this afternoon.

I hope he doesnt resign either! Whats between him and his wife is between them. Hes paying for the trip, however he did other things while he was there beside be in love! He has done a lot of good for this state and always stood beside us. His wife said she kicked him out. He obviously was going through a lot and needed some time away. So what he took a trip and didnt tell no one! Get over it Im not going to let that one mistake stand in the way of the things that he did for this state and us! One of his emails said that he loved her for loving him for who he is not what he could be or etc.... We dont know his side of it. Yes it is wrong to cheat I agree to that. But we shouldnt hang him out to dry! He would never do that to us! Even if he disappeared for a couple days with all that on him he needed to! Just my thoughts.....

I guess I just dont undeerstand how one mistake to our state (who by the way didnt have any need for him those days) could lead to all these thoughts of hate. Now if we would of got a hurricane or been hit by a missle or something and he wasnt here that would be one thing. Nothing happen to us while he was gone. He needed a moment to hisself has no one ever needed that? His wife just kicked hom out told him not to come around even on fathers day. What was he suppose to do? He went to his meetings and let the devil get the best of him. Nothing Im sure everyone on heer hasnt let happen before. Let the mman upstairs handle it on judgement day! First I dont think this should be a Dem. Rep. thing. I dont understand why Clinton is even being mentioned! As far as two men being (married) let them call it something else marriage is between a man and a woman!!! If they want to do it call it something else. Im not saying its right for what he did Im just saying he has been good to this state and shouldnt be impeached over one mistake that he done in a very tragic and crazy time in his life. He obviously was out of his mind with grief and all at the time this happened. He was kicked out and made a HUGE mistake! He was in a very bad place and made some very bad decisions. As we all do under stress and times pain. He knows he done wrong and he will have to pay! Kicking him out of offise does what? Make all you Dems feel better about Clinton? Please this has nothing to do with him! Lets stick with this issue.

He has done a lot of good for this state and always stood beside us.

What good has he done for this state @praying4all? He's done absolutely NOTHING good for the state in his 7 years in office! Under his administration we're always in the top three with the highest Unemployment, we're at near BOTTOM in education compared to the the other 49 states, he SUES his own state over stimulus funds allocated to it, he has brought NO new businesses or corporations to S.C., he was constantly in the media while neglecting his duties he was elected to do to further his OWN agenda for 2012 pres. run, he has subjected the people and the state of S.C. as a JOKE and needless attacks by comedians, the nation and world even as uneducated, backwards people, ALL 10 of his vetoes were overridden by his OWN republican party, he didn't want to ask for Unemployment funds so that workers laid off could receive their benefits they're entitled to, he preaches against tax waste but yet he USES the taxpayers money for his trip to participate in his adulterous affair, and I could go on, on, and on but I'll pause so you'll be able to DIGEST some of this. Again, What GOOD has Mark Sanford done for the state of S.C. these past seven years?

Seneca, your first amendment rights don't protect anything you post on a private message board, especially when you agree to the rules of the private board and agree that your posts can be deleted at any time. To further correct your lack of knowledge, Liberals aren't Communists; Communism demands fast, violent revolution against social, political and economic elites by the working classes, which isn't what Liberals want at all. To go even further in aiding you, you should be aware that our president's full name is Barack Hussein Obama, and that his middle name has nothing to do with anything. In short, please stop being brainwashed.

Praying, you don't have a right to be posting here; you consented to the terms of a service agreement with the P&C website staff when you signed up, and you're posting at their convenience and within the confines of not being allowed to offend or ostracize other posters. You should probably keep inflamatory phrases like "marriage is between a man and a woman" to yourself. The government has no business making laws about who can marry who, beyond legal age of consent. Stop trying to legislate some twisted perversion of morality and "separate but equal" mentality. It didn't work for education, and it doesn't work for marriage between two loving people who are devoted to each other and wish to make a lifelong commitment.

Sanford and his family deserve privacy while they deal with the aftermath of this event, but what's ultimately more important is that we the people of South Carolina deserve to have an honest, responsible adult in the office of governor. We don't need some self-styled crusader who ditches his responsibilities, runs out on his state and his family, essentially steals state property and misappropriate state funds to go philandering in Buenos Aires. Bringing up the issue of former President Clinton's infidelity only highlights Sanford's hypocrisy as a family values politician and in his having called for Clinton's resignation. While Sanford's credibility as a family values politician has clearly evaporated, he still has the opportunity to demonstrate that he understands the old cliche "what's good for the goose is good for the gander," and resign, just as he wanted Clinton to.

See, the new "transparent" Hussein administration promised you that the bill would be posted on the White House web site for a minimum of 5 days before the final vote. Hussein has once again proven himself to be a liar. This crap kind of makes the Sanford story look kind of foolish when you consider that Hussein and his liberal morons are getting ready to pass a bill that will literally destroy this country and at the very least cause great harm to every tax paying citizen of this country.

So what you're saying, Seneca, is that you're a closed-minded hatemonger who holds prejudices against and slanders anyone who doesn't fall in line with your worldview. That's simple enough to understand. Glad we could clear that up.

By all means, though, feel free to get an education, at least to the point where you can understand what Communism really is or what its significance is in the reality of 20th and 21st Century events. Despite your overzealous party or ideological loyalty, even you should be able to understand that this entire Socialist/Communist rhetoric that Republicans and ultra-conservative political commentators have been propagating is a deception and a distraction from the real political and economic issues we as a nation are currently faced with.

Having the mindset that it's okay to blame all of this country's problems on one political group and ignore the grave missteps of members of your preferred group is far more likely to be damaging to the country as a whole and to citizens in particular than your lack of understanding or acceptance of the current administration and its actual goals.

Again, I invite you to disregard the brainwashing you've bought into and study true, legitimate facts. Any time you want to stop being an extremist puppet being led around by a conflated ideological carrot, you're free to join in rational conversation.

As per your specific ad hominem attacks against me, I can assure you that I am not a Communist - in fact, I favor Libertarian ideals for government and regulated capitalist ideals for economy. I can also assure you that I am in fact gainfully employed with a private organization whose goal is to serve the community. So, not only are your political beliefs woefully inadequate when faced with reality, but your pathetic, childish insults against me also fall flat in face of the facts. I'm assuming that won't stop you from living in a deluded fantasy land, but as ever, I rest easy with the knowledge that the ones who really hate me are just you and a few other shamefully out of touch psychopathic zealots who have no grasp of reality. Your misbegotten opinion of me and inability to grasp the realities of American and world politics don't amount to a hill of beans, in the grand scheme of things.
