Reaction from state politicians
"Today's revelations are disturbing and shocking. There is no excuse for the unfortunate events that have transpired in recent days. The personal issues must be sorted out by the Sanford family and we hope for the best for them. ... For five days the governor let his staff deceive the press and the people of South Carolina regarding where he was and what he was doing. The governor's absence has brought to light some issues regarding the chain of command in the absence of the chief executive."
Bobby Harrell, R-Charleston, speaker of the House
"I've been a close friend of Mark and Jenny since our election to Congress in 1994. Like all of their friends, I want the best for their family and hope they can repair the damage. I will provide any personal support I can. ... The Sanford family needs time and space to work through their challenges. ... "
Lindsey Graham, U.S. senator, R-S.C.
"I'm deeply disturbed that NO ONE knew where Governor Sanford was over the last five days. He left the country and deliberately made himself unavailable without delegating power to the lieutenant governor. In the process, he misled his staff, who unknowingly misled the public. ... We cannot let the governor's personal life overshadow his public responsibility. ... "
Harvey Peeler, Senate majority leader, R-Cherokee
"Ultimately, this is a sad day for the Sanford family and all of South Carolina. I am disappointed in the poor personal choices our governor has made. I commend the governor in the complete honesty and candor he showed today. ... Now is the time to pray for the Sanford family."
Kenny Bingham, House majority leader, R-Cayce
"This entire incident was strange from the beginning, but today's revelations were stunning. My heart goes out to the first lady and their four sons. While the Republican Caucus has had its share of differences with the governor over the years, we all stand in support of the Sanford family. "
Bruce Bannister, assistant House majority leader, R-Greenville.
"Upon hearing the governor's announcement today, I want to extend my heartfelt thoughts to the Sanford family during this most difficult time. I am saddened at the news of this revelation and encourage the people of South Carolina to allow the Sanford family to deal with this matter with the privacy that each of us would hope for."
Henry E. Brown Jr., U.S. representative, R-S.C.
"I think we all know that leaving the state without a governor for any period of time is not acceptable. I suspect Governor Sanford now understands that better than anyone else. My hope is that this sad experience will make Mark a better governor and a better public servant during the final months of his administration. My heart goes out to Mark, Jenny, and the boys. ... "
Henry McMaster, state attorney general and GOP candidate for governor
"This is a time for the governor to be handling personal family matters, and I ask that his family's privacy be respected. My thoughts and prayers are with Jenny Sanford and the boys. This is an unfortunate distraction for our state, and we cannot afford to lose sight of the problems that desperately need to be addressed in South Carolina. "
Vincent Sheheen, state senator, D-Camden, and Democratic candidate for governor
"We keep the governor and his family in our prayers during this difficult time."
Gresham Barrett, U.S. representative, Republican candidate for governor
"While Governor Sanford and I have long shared a political philosophy, today's revelations go well beyond politics. This is a tragic situation for the Sanford family and for our state. My prayers are with the Sanfords, and in particular with Jenny and the boys. ... "
Nikki Haley, state representative, R-Lexington, and GOP candidate for governor
"I think that Mark Sanford should be judged as governor for the last six years and not anything else."
Robert Ford, state senator, D-Charleston, Democratic candidate for governor
"On the personal front, today's news is neither a Republican nor Democrat issue. It is sad that any family suffers like this, particularly when it is played out on a public stage. Conservative leaders have earned and kept the trust of South Carolina's majority for many years, and I will make every effort to ensure our party keeps that trust."
Karen Floyd, S.C. GOP chairman
"I am shocked and disappointed, as I'm sure every other South Carolinian is at this time; and quite frankly I'm having a difficult time digesting what has developed. As a Christian, I will be praying for Mark Sanford, Jenny and their family. ... However, I do believe that his decision to engage in an extramarital affair, coupled with the fact that I believe he deliberately misled his staff and the people of South Carolina over an extended period of time, must come with serious consequences. ... "
Harry Ott, House minority leader, D-St. Matthews

I'd want him to resign if Andre Bauer wasn't the one who would take over. Little A is probably salivating at the thought...

Ya don't think old Harvey is still sore about his brother losing to Sanford a few years back do ya? He's the only one above to not make a more appropriate statement. Even our Democrats were classy in their statements, look at Ford's statement, respectful and to the point.

Quoted: "For two days, Sanford's aides had insisted that the governor merely took time off to go hiking in the mountains".
Just like the previous "aides" up there a few years back...lies, lies, lies...
And I wonder at times, why we have such a low voter turn out rate in this state when any election comes around.

This certainly demonstrates the humanness of mankind, as well as the fallenness!
Governor Sanford has confessed his sin. As a Christian, my response is to forgive him, and aid him however I can in the restoration of his marriage, and restoration of his effectiveness in office for the balance of his term as governor.

Wow! Really? Man, I could have sworn this all transpired during his 2nd and final term and he therefore could not be reelected. Are you rewriting history here, dawhetsell? And I won't even begin to comment on the strawman Obama argument!

Come on Lovely, you really need to stop presenting Honest Facts to people like dawhetsell.
http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/1998/r...
The above link is an actual timeline for the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal. It all happened and was brought to public knowledge during his SECOND term as President.
I have no problem with anyone pointing out the indiscretions of elected politicians.
But let's not be disingenuous about what's happened with politicians from ALL parties.
What I find disingenuous is "conservatives" who are deflecting Governor Sanford's admitted imprudence by bringing up all that is wrong with Democratic politicians.
Dawhetsell is only one of many who regularly post on this site who have to wipe the spittle from their faces over this VERY VERY sordid affair. They're salivating over this current scandal in order to either defend or attack politicians.
Facts?
Who cares about that?
Let's pull President Obama into this fray because one, it's the lazy man's way to start a "debate" and two, I'm not intelligent enough to truly engage in a REAL cogent debate.

Those facts are right, but flip the pages of the Clinton Biography pages backwards to 1992 for the funny dirt.
In 1992 during the Clintons first campaign for Prez, the statements of extramarital affairs came up during the Hampshire primaries. Unless everyone is too young to remember Clinton and his wife went on national TV to rebuke the claims. Then Flowers went on the air and slam dunked him with intimate tape recording of the two talking. What was even funnier was on the tape he likened Cuomo as a mafia member. Which Cuomo has still not accepted his apology. And the the complaining that another democratic Prez contender, Bob Kerrey, had it made because Kerrey was single and no one cared about who Kerry is sleeping with. BTW: Kerrey was dating Actress Deb Winger at the time: anyway. It was in 1998 after all the other allegations were unfolding to be true did Mr. Bill admit that he did have an affair with Ms. Flowers.
