Sanford fallout seen as severe, with long-lasting effects
By Robert Behre , Schuyler Kropf
As much as the mavericks saw Mark Sanford as a Republican star of the future, was Wednesday's news conference his political swan song?
There's little doubt that Sanford's 2012 presidential ambitions are over. The question now is: Can he weather the storm, remain in office and effectively represent the state?
The Post and Courier
Gov. Mark Sanford takes the oath for his second term in office as his son Blake holds the Bible as his other sons (from left) Marshall, Landon and Bolton look on during the Inaugural ceremony Jan. 10, 2007. Sanford's admission of an extramarital affair likely will injure his credibility with the public.
Those who've worked in previous gubernatorial administrations say the fallout from Sanford's bizarre Appalachian Trail hike-turned-Argentine tango will be significant, long-lasting and extended.
"He's damaged the government's part of this crisis," said Bob McAlister, former chief of staff to Gov. Carroll A. Campbell Jr.
A huge credibility gap — one Sanford allowed to linger for days — now exists throughout the administration. It will prompt every trooper, teacher, bureaucrat and voter to reassess anything Sanford says or does. It could affect a business sector leader's decisions to meet with him.
"Sanford is a lot of things, but I would never figure him for a Romeo," said Francis Marion University political scientist Neal Thigpen, who follows Republican politics. "Now he's not even a lame duck — he's a dead duck. He's kind of a sad character."
By all accounts, Sanford broke a cardinal sin of leadership: allowing his staff to tell the press corps and the people of South Carolina a story he knew wasn't true, either making them part of the conspiracy or unwittingly making them part of a cover-up.
"He also took it upon himself to stop being governor" for a week while he was in Argentina, McAlister said. What's worse, Sanford will be seen as a hypocrite.
As a congressman, Sanford didn't hold back on House Speaker-designate Bob Livingston, R-La., after he admitted an affair in 1998. "The bottom line is Livingston lied," Sanford said at the time during an appearance on CNN. "He lied to his wife."
During former President Bill Clinton's scandal, Sanford chimed in, "I think it would be much better for the country and for him personally (to resign). ... I come from the business side. ... If you had a chairman or president in the business world facing these allegations, he'd be gone."
Sanford said he was comfortable with his vote backing impeachment articles, calling Clinton's behavior "reprehensible."
Sanford's name was expected to surface more often this summer during talk of possible GOP White House contenders, or even as a leader helping to reshape its message. Now, the story of Sanford's disappearance is helping shape jokes about the Palmetto State.
"I think it is fair to say his 2012 White House hopes are dead," said University of Virginia political scientist Larry Sabato. "Americans will forgive a lot, as we have come to see. But what they won't forgive is an apparent dereliction of duty. Sanford was AWOL. If an emergency had happened, the governor could not have been reached. Staffers in the governor's office are no substitute for the elected head of government."
Sabato added, "There has been so much prevarication in this incident that I don't know how Sanford gets his credibility back. I believe he's headed for a nice long career in the private sector."
One big question will be how Sanford's confession affects the 2010 gubernatorial race. One of the Republican contenders, state Rep. Nikki Haley, R-Lexington, took Sanford's picture down from her Web site. "Obviously, the governor has fallen far short ...," she said, "and that is extremely unfortunate."
One Democratic gubernatorial hopeful, state Sen. Vincent Sheheen, D-Camden, said his prayers are with Sanford's family, adding, "This is an unfortunate distraction for our state, and we cannot afford to lose sight of the problems that desperately need to be addressed in South Carolina."

"Now he's not even a lame duck - he's a dead duck".
Lets see, not only is he a "dead duck", but he is also a stupid, lying, no-good-for-nothing, pathetic loser duck.
If the duck acts stupid, is he a "stupid duck"?
Lets give Sanfraud the duck test.
If the duck lies, is he a "lying duck"?
If the duck has an affair, is he a "philandering duck"?
If the duck has an affair and he lies about, does that make him a "stupid","lying", "no-good-for-nothing", "pathetic loser duck"?
I say if he acts like a duck, walks like a duck, and talks like a duck, then we have one freakin' stupid duck on our hands!

If Sanford does not follow his own advice to others who have been in a similar situation and resign he should be prepared to reap all the political bad will he has generated for the last 7 years.
A person of character would not drag his family through this. Of course no one is calling Sanford a person of character anymore are they?
Get Andre Bauer in so everyone can see what a total douchebag he is and we won't see his name on another ballot either.
I don't know who is more pitiful Sanford or the republican party who are reduced to fielding immoral and corrupt politicians who they know are morally and politically flawed. It would be nice if the republicans would just get it over with and die. The spectacle of Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck and Fox trying to spin these jokers as serious politicians is getting to be to much to bear.

Be careful what you wish for, you may get it. Sanford has been following the directions of the National Republican Party (the stimulus) Who wins from his losses? Jeb Bush. Have you noticed that all the problems in the way of the other top contenders for 2012 are being eliminated and all over SEX. This is so OLD like Bush 41. Haven't we had enough disasters from the Bush family?

realamerican..I agree with your statement. Let's get rid of these Democrats who are immoral and corrupt...lets get rid of Barney Frank..he had a prostitution ring in his basement and lied about his involvement with Freddie and Fannie.Ted Kennedy because he killed a woman while on a drunken binge.Bill Clinton because he lied to America about his affair or affairs;you choose.John Edwards because of his affair( cheating on a dying woman...he's truly evil).Eliot Spitzer who used prostitutes and cheated on his wife.Jesse Jackson for his affair and the fathering of a child out of wedlock.Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa who had an affair.San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom who admitted to having an affair,at least it was with a woman!Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick who had an extramarital affair with his chief of staff.Florida U.S. Rep. Tim Mahoney who admitted he had an affair with an aide and it is reported paid her $121,000 to keep her quiet and avoid a sexual harassment lawsuit.
Dang...I'm tired of writing; there are dozens more these Democrats but I guess you get the picture that the Republicans don't share the pedestal of adultery alone!

Once upon a time when I was quite naive, I refused to vote for a local politician of my usual party because I knew he was unfaithful to his wife. My statement then was "If you cannot be faithful to the person you vowed faithfulness to, how can you be counted on to be faithful to the public?" Years later, I feel the same, but, wonder if there are any politicians who fill the bill.

we all need someone in touch with the reality most of us live in... dems and repubs alike... we need to get rid of all the kennedy's and bush's, and find some regular old smiths or jones for office... our next door neighbor's...

My morals are fine. How about yours?
Of course neither of us are portraying ourselves as a bible thumping governor of South Carolina.
I find it amusing you fail to see the difference between republicans and democrats when it comes to infidelity. While always distasteful surely even you must notice it is republicans who want to control others behavior or to tell others how to live. The "christian conservatives" would even put their religious views into law if allowed. These self appointed religious guardians of the peoples morality seem to be the worst abusers when it comes to adultery and other perversions they rail against.
Sanford and those like him hold themselves up as paragons of virtue. It is only right that when they transgress and are caught they face stronger scrutiny and disdain.

Now is the time to step back for a moment. We have 2 issues here.
First, his personal life.
Though many of us are upset and angry, I'm sure his family is even more so. We need to give them a chance to absorb this and let them move forward with their dignity and restart their lives. His wife and children deserve our respect for their privacy. We voted them into the spotlight, its the least we can do.
Second, his political life.
Unfortunately he did everything that he has spent years saying was wrong. Lead by example shall never be said again. This man lied, possibly had his staff lie, his secret detail lie and so on. His credibility as an honest person who should be there to represent the people of South Carolina is shattered. He needs to step down with the small amount of dignity that remains and let the state of South Carolina starting their own healing process.

So, you have to realize that, while I do support your call for the gov's removal and for his public condemnation, I do not buy your hypocritical holier than thou remarks. When Mark Sanford was first running for governor he was duly informed and warned about criminal acts of misconduct by officers of the family court. The family court was indeed no more than a criminal industry. Sanford had people believing that he would look into the matter upon election.
Perhaps Jenny Sanford will give Mark cause to remember some empty promises there.

At least he didn't look the people of the United States in the eye, shake his finger and lie about the affair. What does bother me is that he grossly neglected his duties, and responsibilities, as our Governor. He left the state unannounced, without contact, and with, at best, vague and incorrect information about his intentions.
He needs to resign today.

Dear Liberals_Are_Maroons.. the situation of Gov Sanford Vs. President Clinton is ever so slightly different. Infidelity on both parties... YES.... but abandoning ones job with no one left duly in charge only happened with Sanford.
Now, people will say.. oh but he was reachable.. Ummm no he wasn't. Even his staff did not have a clear understanding as to where he was and his cell phone was TURNED OFF.
Sure if watching the news in Argentina (highly doubtful) and he saw and emergency in SC, maybe he could have returned, but let's us remember that not that long ago, there was a MAJOR AIR DISASTER on an Air France flight with many lives lost. With no clear understanding of where our Gov was, in event of an emergency, there would be no guarantee that his flight home would not have had trouble, and to get the manifest of passengers names would have taken days if not weeks for the airline to release, and the State of SC would have been without proper leadership. For that... he should resign!
I don't care that he cheated on his wife just as I did not care about Clinton, what I as a person who voted for him twice as gov, and for him while in Congress care about is that he abandoned his job and but for his simple dislike of Bauer, he did not turn over power while he was gone, leaving us without a head of our State in event of an emergency.. he was just lucky that there was no emergency, otherwise he would be in deeper doo doo than he is currently.

Not that the guv did something we can look the other way, but he came clean. I don't believe Clinton did the same to the country except try to hide under the cover of how to define some small word. He probably apologized to his wife in private, but not publicly, and that was to stay in office.

Then you can campaign for election to another position. This does away with the professional politition. Which is just another name for crook (regardless of party). This would also mean that an elected official will serve his full term instead of spending half of it campaining for reelection. I know this is extreme but think about it for awhile...
just my thoughts ( and ramblings)...

BTW, despite what was said about Clinton, and his 'personal' goings on with Monica and it not affecting his job. I will not take the weak position of the left during Clintons time in office.
There is a reason, that this type of behavior is illegal in the military, it can jeopardize a member's security clearance, because of threat of blackmail.
I think character does matter and Sanford should resign.

I love the statement Thug-character does matter! Some people may resign themselves to not care about it and it is okay if they are mislead and lied to, maybe that is what they are used to and accept it.I do not-I fully expect truth honesty and veracity from people in general, but am not surprised by the lack of it in politicians. Not sure when people settled for less, but for some reason many or ok with it.

This isn't about the Dems vs the Republicans. This isn't about Clinton, or Frank or Ensign.
This is about our Governor, how he governs, and his credibility as Governor.
This is about his moral fiber to lead this state.
This is about his commitment to South Carolina.
When you run for office you are and should be held to a higher standard. In addition Mr. Sanford held himself even higher as a moral compass for the citizens of this state and the country.
In all of these respects he has failed. He has fail in any number of ways. He has shown disregard for his family and for his State.
My heart goes out for his family, they are the ultimate victims.
Stop bring up other politicians. Stop trying to make this a conservative vs liberal fight, This isn't a football game. This situation should be looked at as a singular event.

Sanford did nothing wrong in what people call abandoning his post. Why do you think McConnell is pushing forth legislation for a Constitutional change to force the Governor to let someone outside the staff know when there is a trip outside of the state? Currently there are no provisions to stop any Governor from just taking an excursion with family or mistress or heck even both if they are into that.
His other problem is something he and his wife need to work out. But I can already see it now. If I was to drive by their house on the island, I would be willing to bet there are some bloodsucking paparazzi idiots camped outside the driveway; Salivating at the mouth waiting for to opportunity to pounce on the wife and or kids with a barrage of questions that will drive the kids literally to a therapist later on. But then again all of you Sanford haters from before this unfolded are probably salivating already and waiting in line to get your copy of the enquirer. Perhaps you can put it next to the copy of the one you have when Clinton was caught lying to the country about his relationships!
a comment says 'he broke the law': Did you know that some driving infractions carry the same fines in SC? Let's go through and kick everyone out that has broken any law and see where we are. What is sad about the law mentioned, it says he could go to jail for what he did, but the veto overturned by the 'so called leadership' in Columbia now gives child molesters much less time.

AT LEAST HE DIDN'T TRY TO DENY IT OR LIE LIKE THE REST (BILL CLINTON), AND HE WAS STRAIGHT FORWARD AND PUBLIC WITH HIS ADMISSION. HE MIGHT HAVE TOLD THE PUBLIC MORE THAN WE WANTED OR NEEDED TO HEAR. SOME OF THIS STUFF IS NONE OF OUR BUSINESS (INFIDELITY) AND SOME IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO HIS JOB PERFORMANCE (GOING AWAY AND NOT LETTING ANYONE KNOW OR HAVE A PHONE NUMBER TO CONTACT HIM). I FAULT HIM FOR THE WAY HE HANDLED THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS AND AS FAR AS HIS INFIDELITY, WHAT'S NEW, IT'S ALMOST PART OF THE RESUME TO APPLY TO BE A POLITICIAN ANYMORE.. THERE ARE MORE UNFAITHFUL PEOPLE IN POLITICS THAN ANY WHERE ELSE. AS LONG AS HE TAKES CARE OF HIS RESPONSIBILITIES AS GOVERNOR HE CAN KEEP HIS PERSONAL LIFE TO HIMSELF. WE ALL NEED TO STAY OUT OF HIS PERSONAL LIFE BECAUSE CONTRARY TO A LOT OF BELIEFS FLOATING AROUND, IT IS NONE OF OUR BUSINESS. HE IS A HUMAN AS WELL AS A POLITICIAN. THE ONLY THING HE HAS TO PUT UP WITH NOW IS BEING IN THE NEWS FOR A FEW DAYS UNTIL SOMEONE ELSE TAKES HIS PLACE IN THE NEWS.

Sorry, Luna, but pointing to arcane laws that enforce biblical morality when not everyone is a biblical follower and that rarely exist among other states for that very reason is hardly an endorsement. The LAST thing we need is more government in our bedrooms based on the teachings one ONE religion.

Gover no Sanford "Sand Foot"
South Carolina thought governor Sanford was the man with the plan But he has his head and his foot in the sand. A governor is suppose to help the people however he or she can. But he told the people talk to the hand because the face doesn't understand. He don't have a clue on what to do and he wants to run for president! He don't know how to take care of his own residents.
He got Vietnams vets living in tents and nurses and teachers cant pay the rent. Police and firemen can't fix a dent because he don't want to accept the stimulus check. And get all of us out this train wreck. People can't even afford Trident Tech. He don't understand this crazy effect. Some people have to live check to check. We are the talk of the town Because our schools are all rundown kids walkin around with a frown. Hopefully we can turn this around because people are struggling and drug Smuggling I don't excuse any crime but I understand because it's hard times And it's messing up people's minds.
I'm a Quadriplegic and my heart is bleeding because my parents Have to work so hard
Because he is playing this politic card. We all have to pray Because it's so damn hard. I'm sorry he made me cuss Because I'm ready to fuss because of all this disgust That stimulus check is a must. Do for me and you Even Winnie the Pooh and Scooby Doo and for teachers to stay in school People are stealing and robbing banks and don't know how to think People are killing their family & friends 'cause they don't know how to cope til The end.
Governor Sanford is relaxing in his mansion Knowing he's gonna get a pension while other people have tension In their life, breaking up husbands and wives, going through all this stress As the President tries to fix this mess, the President is trying to help But Governor Sanford is trying to tie us down with his belt He must be smoking weed like Michael Phelps All he is thinking about is himself because he is out in left field Playing Deal or No Deal, playing with people's meal He is a liar and playing with fire. Rolling over people like a tire When he was first running, he said he would cut out property tax All he's done was drop his ax and raised tax to the max. And he has no one's back and that's a fact, so hit the road, Jack

SCHoser, I am totally with you. I fully expect the truth from people that I meet daily and give it in return. From time to time, I am burned. I laugh at my gullibility, but I prefer to expect the truth and act accordingly. However, once that trust is compromised, I cannot seem to return to that same level of trust. I expect the same from the leaders in my life. As leaders, I expect that they not only act honorably but appear to act honorably. Once they knowingly break that trust, then I recommend their resignation as untrustworthy to lead.

The most telling thing to come from this whole mess pretty much sums up the differences between a liberal and a conservative. If you're a liberal you can have a gay lover that you appoint to a lucrative government job and that lover can run a lending institution into the ground until it takes billions of tax payer dollars to bail it out and your promoted to party leadership. If you're a liberal you can cheat on your wife and kill the woman you cheat with, walk free and become the respected face of the party. If your a conservative and cheat on your wife you need to be tarred and feathered and banished from the kingdom. It's easy to see who makes the rules. Go figure!

This is NOT a republican or democrat issue. Does not matter if you like President Obama or not, if if you think that Mrs. Obama is pretty or not.... It is an issue of a man that cheated on his wife (Happens all the time). That issue is for them to resolve. The bigger issue is what he did to the state of SC, by lying to constituents, using taxpayer monies to further his affair, and leaving us without a leader of the state (no matter how short the time.) The man is still lying to the people of the state of SC.
