Get some 'cue at Willie Jewell's

Thursday, June 25, 2009

Jacksonville, Fla.-based Bono's Pit Bar-B-Q has picked the local site for its new dining concept.

The first franchise location of Willie Jewell's Old School Bar-B-Q will be at 8983 University Blvd. near Trident Medical Center and Charleston Southern University in North Charleston.

It should open in August.

Willie Jewell's owner, Joe Adeeb, envisions the new eatery as a smaller, fast-casual restaurant concept with a smaller menu and a slightly less-expensive bill compared to Bono's, but it still will include all the sauces and flavors of its full-service restaurant with low- and slow-smoked meats that has made Bono's a Jacksonville favorite since 1949.

The restaurant also will have a charitable arm, a direct result of its namesake, who was found wandering the streets of Jacksonville in the 1940s with no job, no home and no family.

Adeeb's grandfather offered Willie Jewell, as she was affectionately known, a job in his restaurants, the Green Turtle and the Sea Turtle.

It turned out that Willie Jewell Daniels could cook just about anything and helped fine-tune recipes and sauces.

Adeeb attributes just about everything he knows about cooking to Willie Jewell, so in her memory, the company will work with one organization dedicated to helping women at each Willie Jewell's location. The donation will go to one woman who embodies the spirit and character of Willie Jewell or the organization as a whole.

The first recipient is My Sister's House Inc. , a safe haven for battered women in Charleston.

Franchise owners and operators are Laurie and Carl Langford of

Goose Creek, who earlier this year sold three Larry's Giant Subs in the metro area.
