Gov. Mark Sanford's staff continued to tell the public Tuesday night that the governor was hiking along the Appalachian Trail even after a reporter greeted him at the Atlanta airport on his way home from a vacation in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Sanford told the State Media Company that he decided at the last minute to go to South America to recharge after a tough legislative session. He told his staff he might go hiking.

"But I said 'no' I wanted to do something exotic ... It's a great city," he said during an interview at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Lowcountry residents react to Governor Mark Sanford's absence. These interviews were done before Sanford's press conference, in which he admitted a year-long extramarital affair.

Sanford said he was alone on the trip and declined to give any additional details other than to say he drove along the coastline.

He told the reporter he didn't know why his staff told reporters he was on the Appalachian Trail.

The governor's office has scheduled a press conference that is set to begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

The Post and Courier e-mailed the governor's press secretary Joel Sawyer at 5:40 p.m. Tuesday and asked about a tip that the governor was in Aruba or Antigua.

Sawyer returned the e-mail and said the tip was wrong. When our reporter pressed him for more information about 8 p.m., Sawyer wrote: "My understanding is that he's on the (Appalachian Trail), or presumably on the way back at this point. ... We haven't said where on the AT he is because I don't know specifically.

"Also, as I indicated first thing this morning (go back and read the statement) the governor called in to his Chief of Staff first thing this morning."

Messages left by The Post and Courier for Sawyer this morning weren't immediately returned.

Sanford told The State reporter he left Thursday night from the Columbia Metropolitan Airport. Media reports said a State Law Enforcement Division SUV the governor drove that night was spotted in the airport's parking lot. Sanford said he decided not to return via the Columbia airport to avoid the media.

South Carolina will be waiting for the governor's explanation today.

South Carolina State Senate Democratic Leader John C. Land, III, D-Manning, said in a statement Wednesday that the people of South Carolina deserve "complete honesty" from the governor.

"The Governor's office misled the media, the Lt. Governor, and the people of South Carolina," Land said. "Never in my 32 years as a state Senator have I witnessed a Governor and his staff act in a more dishonest, secretive, and bizarre manner. There is something very wrong here and serious questions need to be asked about the Governor's 6 day disappearance."

Sen. Jake Knotts, R-West Columbia, said that this incident shows the world the level of dishonesty that legislators have known for seven years. The governor has dealt the press, elected officials, SLED and the citizens of South Carolina a bunch of "bizarre untruths," Knotts said today in a statement.

A security guard at the governor's mansion Wednesday morning said he couldn't comment on the family's status. There appeared to be no activity at the house.

Jenny Sanford, through a SLED agent, declined requests for interviews when reached at the family's Sullivan's Island beach home late Wednesday morning.

A red Ford Crown Victoria with a female SLED agent inside was blocking the driveway, and at least one SLED agent is in the home. A black Labrador could be seen running in the yard.

Few argue that a governor deserves a little R&R, but his absence left many questions unanswered: Why did the governor leave without telling his wife, the state's top law enforcement officer or the lieutenant governor where he was going?

What exactly was he doing? And how would the state have handled an emergency should one have arisen while he was away and out of touch?

The mystery surrounding his whereabouts was called into question after Fox News reported he was visiting a friend in Nevada. Several sources within the infamous Bunny Ranch brothel in Carson City, Nevada stated the Governor was seen "in and out of the establishment over the last several days."

http://sameritech.wordpress.com/2009/...

On Tuesday, sources told News 4's Nigel Robertson that a state vehicle is missing and was tracked down, not to the Appalachian Trail, but to the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta.

Sources told Robertson that a federal agent spotted Sanford in the airport boarding a plane. Robertson was told that the governor was not accompanied by security detail.

But sources told WYFF News 4 that the federal agent who spotted Sanford saw him at the Atlanta airport, which is about 80 miles from the start of the trail.

Who is going to hold the Governor accountable for his AWOL status? He failed to report his whereabouts to anyone for 4 days. This irresponsible action should require some sort of reprimand or disciplinary action. Governor Sanford chose his actions so now he should face the consequences. As an elected official, he of all people should be accountable for his actions.

What has he ACCOMPLISHED in almost eight years? His defenders can NEVER answer that when this question is posed to them! They talk around in circles but can NOT list anything noteworthy he has done for the good of this state. I can list several things he's accomplished such as making sure we continue to be near the top when it comes to Unemployment, At the near bottom in education, attracting no major corporations or businesses to S.C., embarrassing the state and the citizens by trying to SUE his state over federal funds allocated to it, Neglecting his duties by constantly seeking media attention to focus on HIMSELF instead of doing the job he was elected for, subjecting the people of S.C. and the state as a JOKE to the nation and the world, had 10 vetoes over turned by his OWN republican party during the last legislative session, I could go on and on but hopefully one can see the complete FAILURES by this Clown!

Reminds me of when Alma confronts Ennis about his empty creel after his Brokeback trips. Things smell real bad.

I doubt anyone would deny the governor a vacation as such, but the point is: he holds a -public- office and he owes that -public- office a duty. It -appears- that Governor Sanford has ignored his -public duty-, don't you think?

Are you pinko commies being paid? I smell ACORN all over these posts. To any sane person who reads this, Sanford is being attacked by the people you think of when you think of SC. I was shocked when I left Charleston to go to the University of South Carolina to find out that the interior of our state is as backwards as "they" said. I used to think SC was a cosmopolitan place, but when I moved to Columbia I realized this state is packed with true simpletons. Our Governor has tried to run out the systemic fraud in the Statehouse and this is how they punish him.
One must understand that in the area's these simple country politicians come from there is nothing but government money. There is no industry and no tax base, only money the state pumps in for roads, programs etc. When railroads and cotton were king, these places did well. When the Interstate system came in the towns were bypassed and doomed to obscurity. These pathetic politicians from area's like these hang on to the neck of this state choking us out for more cash and benefits at a time when our state needs to be competitive. They are holding on to the past. Mcconnel and Harrell are "surviving" by brown nosing these country boys and doing exactly what is expected of them. All upstate and peidmont legislators HATE Charleston. Sanford lives in Charleston and has friends here, so they hate him. There has been a battles going on for centuries. This battle brought you the pathetic city called Columbia, set up to comfort upstate growers that thought Charleston had too much influence. These legislators control the budgets of our state, the actions of our state and the agencies within our state. The Gov is powerless here!
Sanford has tried to bring accountability and fiscal responsibility to state government and YOU the people have laughed in his face. What you the people don't seem to know is that you are being played by men who care NOTHING for you! They have underfunded and mis-directed funds in the state for decades(education, unemployment, infrastructure and healthcare) and all you can say is that it is unbelievable he left without telling Bauer. Would you want to talk to that joke of a man ever? This is a political trick being played on the legislature by Mark Sanford and in turn they have shown how truely childish they are. Run to your mommy(the media) and tell them Mark is a bad boy.

I respect what Sanford has tried to do in this State. I think the people living in the past should move over and let the future happen. Isn't that what this is all about?

PS this cop shows the same level of education and vendictiveness I expect from a lexington cop.

PSS Mrs. Fowler actually said that Sanford's behaviour was not typical of SC family values, not being with his family on FD. Well Mrs. Fowler, is the democrat party incouraging family values? Food stamps and free school lunch are your idea of family values!

Teddy Roosevelt must have been cut from the same cloth as Sanford. After McKinley was shot, he went on a two week hiking trip in the Adirondaks. When McKinley took a turn for the worse, the VP was found by messengers on New York state's highest peak, Mt. Marcey, at 2 in the morning.

I don't see a problem with the governor taking a vacation. It's not that big of a deal, especially in the technological age we live in. I'm sure he can make executive decisions from space if he needed to.

Should he have ceded power to the Andre? Probably wouldn't have been a bad idea, but again with technology, he can know everything that is going on and how to act on it from anywhere.

If there actually is a huge disaster like a terrorist attack, he will probably be taken to a secret place anyway and be acting as governor from an undisclosed location anyway.

Give the man a break. Everyone needs time to themselves and he certainly deserves some "alone" time to collect his thoughts and gain perspective on tough issues. I, for one, appreciate all he has done for our state and do not condemn him for taking some time. It's a healthy thing to do sometimes. The press needs to let up on this.

Since our South Carolina Legislature acted so swiftly to override his vetoes, it forces all to wonder why so many adopted a "sky is falling" mentality. Former President Bush said it best when he was asked to comment on President Obama's leadership style: "He deserves my silence."

To all the legislators in Columbia: How about ALL OF YOU START EXPLAINING YOUR WHEREABOUTS WHENEVER YOU'RE NOT PRESENT FOR VOTING ON THE FLOOR?! How many of you want to guess how many law clerks tally when several of you go AWOL during the week? How many want your names along with absences published by the P&C? Sanford Changed Flight To Elude Reporters Upon Return

It's worth noting that Globetrotting guv Mark Sanford seems to have gone to some lengths to avoid reporters upon his return.

Sanford left for this trip from the Columbia, South Carolina, airport, it turns out. But he came back by flying into Atlanta. Why?

Sanford said he decided not to return via the Columbia airport to avoid the media. The State Media Company was the only media who greeted Sanford this morning.

It's usually kind of a hassle -- and not cheap -- to change your return flight to a different airport. Sounds like Sanford really was hoping to keep his return hush hush.

Really? There are still people defending Sanford on this one? That's amazing.

This isn't a "vacation" anymore, people. This has nothing to do with whether or not an elected official has the right to take time off. This is about honesty and accountability. We've heard at least three different stories as to his whereabouts, his staff didn't know where he was (and seemingly lied about getting in touch with him), and his own wife and children were cut out of the loop. Meanwhile, his car is found at the Columbia airport full of hiking supplies, and today he says, "Oh yeah, I was in Argentina this whole time."

Clearly, there is more going on here that meets the eye. If this story smelled fishy before (and it did), then now it reeks like a rotting aquarium.

Stephen Colbert Declares Himself Governor Of South Carolina

Stephen Colbert, a native South Carolinian, declared himself governor of his home state last night.

Elected-Governor Mark Sanford has been missing for days, with staff claiming he was hiking the Appalachian Trail, and his wife saying she had no idea where he was. Much to Stephen's chagrin the rogue Republican returned yesterday revealing he had in fact been in Argentina "recharging" after a tough legislative session.

Colbert had courageously stepped in after several state officials voiced concern over South Carolina being leaderless, with one saying:

"Who is at the helm? The way Iran is acting up, and what about weather catastrophes? Hopefully no decision has to be made."
Colbert felt especially qualified for the job because he knows the area, has interviewed Sanford, and (most importantly) is present.

South Carolina legislators considering impeachment for Sanford

Southern Political Report has learned from well-placed sources that some members of the South Carolina legislature are considering an effort to impeach Gov. Mark Sanford after revelations that he spent nearly a week in Argentina without disclosing where he was or providing means of communication.

The South Carolina Consitution is broad in its description of the duties of the governor and under what circumstances impeachment may be considered. The most likely scenario would fall under the Constitution's provision that a governor may be impeached by the state House and then tried by the state Senate for removal from office if found guilty of "serious crimes or serious misconduct in office."

The talk of impeachment comes after another strange twist in the Sanford saga, when he was met Wednesday morning by South Carolina reporters at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Sanford had left word with his staff last week he would be hiking the Appalachian Trail, but he told reporters Wednesday he decided to go somewhere more "exotic," and spent the past seven days in Buenos Aires.

Unless his staff meant to say he was hiking in The Andes, all the subterfuge is incomprehensible to me. If Governor Sanford was in Buenos Aries, as he purports, then he certainly had access to a phone and a litany of U.S. TV stations. After, Gov. Sanford was made aware of the commotion concerning his whereabouts, why didn't he direct his staff to reveal his location? To leave the state is one thing; to leave the country is another.

Argentina is not known for their beaches, so driving along the coast hardly falls into the "exotic" category, especially in the winter. Buenos Aries has an exceptionally active nightlife, so, if Sanford was looking for "exotic", that would be the place to be.

Unfortunately, after all the stories and lies of omission, I would like to see his stamped passport.

THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NOT ONE SINGLE LAW BROKEN OR IGNORED BY SANFORD!

There was no emergency so a call to Prince Andre was unneeded. The Sheriff of Knoxville did not have a need to know. King McConnell is already in motion to fix the problem. His highness will be entering a constitution amendment that forces future Governors with plans on leaving the state, county or kingdom to report to the Prince, the sheriff and even the King as where they will be and for how long.

So untie the wads and take a Xanax, Zoloft, Prozac, Valium or whatever floats your boat. Just chill! Sanford has not broken a single law.

Things are still murky on the Mark Sanford story. But it's looking increasingly likely that Sanford's trip to Argentina was about more than a scenic drive down the coast.

"There is some evidence he was not alone," a source in South Carolina politics told TPMmuckraker. "The other shoe's gonna drop. I believe there's a reason he wanted to drop his SLED detail."

According to the source, a second car was identified at the Columbia airport, next to the SUV Sanford is believed to have used. Two additional sources in South Carolina politics said the same thing.

L_A_M, that was a CLASSIC comeback. Indeed, why doesn't the media further investigate that issue, or why don't they focus on those 12 hours where Senator Kennedy went "missing" as he was getting fished out of the Chappaquiddick? Did libtards call for the impeachment of Kennedy or removal from office?

The double standard is BLATANT as well as the hypocrisy of the libs/Demos/Repubs even to this day. Check out the Roanoke paper link that details Virginia's governor as being able to go wherever he pleases. Even though he was instructed to show his travel reports (as mandated by LAW by the Freedom of Information Act), he has literally refused to say anything about his whereabouts.

http://www.roanoke.com/editorials/wb/...

It is obvious that Bauer, Knotts, Harrell, and McConnell are using the media with this incident to politically backstab Sanford and destroy any credibility he had. Bauer has taken it personally since Sanford's wife did not endorse his earlier candidacy. All of these idiots are Repubs as well...ones that continue to make our state exist as a backwater country and ones that have no problem selling our state's sovreignty for continual trips to the federal government trough. Sanford may be derelict in not telling his spouse or his second-in-command where he was going, but these cretins are truly despicable.

Sanford and his staff could have completely diffused the entire situation by just acknowledging his location days ago. Most responsible adults would make their presence known if an entire state and the national news were looking for them. I would not question Sanford's whereabouts had there not been conflicting stories: one day he is hiking, the next day he is out of the country. Why all the subterfuge? I don't care when, where, or with whom Sanford takes a vacation, but I do care if he lies. charleston1960 (anonymous) says...

Oh my, you really do believe that no one knew where he was...how touching

If there was an emergency, he would have been contacted.

Hurricanes - Sanford as recently as June 15 made public visits to coastal and held discussions on what needs to be done in the event one comes. There needs to be an extreme low pressure for one to form and seeing there was not one in works for that week or even this week, that emergency can be ruled out.

Traumatic events: His staff tracked him down in Estonia after the sofa store fire. Rest assured that if his staff knew how to get in touch with him while he was in Estonia they could have gotten in touch with him wherever he was this last weekend.

The only reason this is an issue is because of the Sheriff of Knott-n-pork and Prince Andre. Both who have aspirations of getting where they want by whatever means possible by building on their self glorifying agenda.

In closing, why does it even matter? The courts have already shown that the legislature has the power, no surprise to King McConnell and Friar Harrell, and put the Governor slot into position of title only.

Bauer has a point, if there had been a serious emergency like say a hurricane that hit the coast, Sanford would not have been able to fly in immediately and if he landed in Atlanta, depending on where damage was, he might not have been able to drive into the state. DUH.. Totally irresponsible!

Just time to say IMPEACH SANFORD!!!

Odds are that better than half the people posting their indignation over the governor's behavior are probably guilty of the same indiscretion.

The only fault I find is the fact he let himself get caught.

It almost appears as though he did it intentionally because he surely must have realized that there was no way he could fly to Argentina and not have it be known.

Now all you left wingers can celebrate in orgasmic joy over his downfall as he joins the ranks of Bill Clinton, Ted Kennedy, James McGreevey, and Eliot Spitzer.

I still stand behind Governor Sanford's political platform and I believe that in spite of the efforts of the legislature he was and is a good Governor for the State of South Carolina.

His moral lapse could spell the end of his political career and in my opinion perhaps that is in the best interest of his family.

He was wrong and he WILL suffer the consequences of his mistake.

My thoughts are with his wife, children and the family on both sides. Many people are personally hurt and disappointed by his actions and I hope that ALL of the players in this sordid affair find a way to peace and recovery.

well lovely...

I continue to stand behind what Governor Sanford stands for politically and I still believe he has a place in politics.

Especially as a Libertarian.

With that said, he needs to take time to rebuild his relationship with his wife, children and both sides of the family.

Even if his marriage fails he should still do all he can to maintain a good relationship with his wife as they will have to co-parent for many years to come.

It may take him having to step down from the governorship. I hope not. He was a lame duck as it is and I'm not in a rush for Ander Bauer to fill his shoes.

Yes, this was a moral lapse. One he will have to work long and hard to not only recover from but to rebuild relationships.

However, I want him to stay as governor.

He may have been unfaithful to his wife, but the so-called "conservative" Republicans of this state have been unfaithful since the day they've been elected.

(Excluding Senator DeMint that is)

Why should he leave and they get to stay?

No I didnt think clinton was right in getting it in at the oval office or by lying to a grand jury either. There are personal mistakes and there are personal mistakes that effect your job and hinder your performance as a public official. They should be separate. That is why I said all the condemening of his personal actions should be left aside, I personally think an accounting of any ways in which this may have affected his judgment or state expenses is in order. It might turn up nothing, but judging by his actions since last Thursday clearly his head was in the wrong place. (Pun actually not intended).

1. you have the ability to give magnificent gentle kisses
2. I love your tan lines
3. I love the curve of your hips
4. the erotic beauty of you holding yourself (or two magnificent parts of yourself)

Sanford expresses romantic feelings for the woman in the e-mails, writing on July 10, 2008, "You have a particular grace and calm that I adore. You have a level of sophistication that so fitting with your beauty. I could digress and say that you have the ability to give magnificent gentle kisses, or that I love your tan lines or that I love the curve of your hips, the erotic beauty of you holding yourself (or two magnificent parts of yourself) in the faded glow of the night's light."

From Gov. Sanford,
Date: Thursday, July 10, 2008, 12:24 a.m.

"One, tomorrow leave at 5 a.m. for New York and meetings. Will think about you on its streets and wish I was going to be there later in the month when you are there. Tomorrow night back to Philadelphia for the start of the National Governor's Conference through the weekend. Back to Columbia for Tuesday and then on Wednesday, as I think I had told you, taking the family to China, Tibet, Nepal, India, Thailand and then back through Hong Kong on world wind tour. Few days home then to Bahamas for 5 days on a friend's boat for the last break of the summer. The following weekend have been asked to spend it out in Aspen, Colorado with McCain - which has kicked up the whole VP talk all over again in the press back home ...

Two, mutual feelings .... You have a particular grace and calm that I adore. You have a level of sophistication that so fitting with your beauty. I could digress and say that you have the ability to give magnificent gentle kisses, or that I love your tan lines or that I love the curve of your hips, the erotic beauty of you holding yourself (or two magnificent parts of yourself) in the faded glow of the night's light - but hey, that would be going into sexual details ...

Three and finally, while all the things above are all too true - at the same time we are in a hopelessly - or as you put it impossible - or how about combine and simply say hopelessly impossible situation of love. How in the world this lightening strike snuck up on us I am still not quite sure. As I have said to you before I certainly had a special feeling about you from the first time we met, but these feelings were contained and I genuinely enjoyed our special friendship and the comparing of all too many personal notes ...

Lastly I also suspect I feel a little vulnerable because this is ground I have never certainly never covered before - so if you have pearls of wisdom on how we figure all this out please let me know... In the meantime please sleep soundly knowing that despite the best efforts of my head my heart cries out for you, your voice, your body, the touch of your lips, the touch of your finger tips and an even deeper connection to your soul."

--------------------

From Maria,
Wednesday, July 9, 2008 8:14 p.m.

"As I told you I shouldn't have done this trip but I would have felt worst if I wouldn't have come because it was too over the date, he is a very nice guy, great heart ... but unfortunately I am not in love with him ... You are my love ... something hard to believe even for myself as it's also a kind of impossible love, not only because of distance but situation. Sometimes you don't choose things, they just happen... I can't redirect my feelings and I am very happy with mine towards you."

You guys don't know what stress is and forgiveness is the last thing you deserve....ESPECIALLY those, like Sanford, who were so judgmental of the lifestyles and standards of others who didn't fit his holier than thou pronouncements. Governor, do us a national favor. Retire to the sidelines and leave the rest of us ALONE!!!

so let me get this correct, according to the logic of our esteemed posters....Republican = having sex with someone of opposite gender, Democrat = having sex with someone of same gender, does that mean if he was a Libertarian he'd be having sex with himself????

Everyone is missing the issue. Mark was never a good conservative he was just cheap. His wife was all the money. His dad was an MD in Fla. and not that really great rich. I'd have voted for Jennie but not him. Of course I claim neither party.

The Post & Courier has got to be the sorriest excuse for a newspaper in SC.

The governor of SC has been routinely sneaking out of the state for a year to see his girlfriend, and your crack reporting staff didn't even notice he was gone? He was in Europe when wild fires broke out in Myrtle Beach, and your staff had no idea he wasn't in the state. What exactly do you pay your reporters to do?

You people have given this loser one break after another without ever questioning him or his actions.

Are you even slightly embarrassed by your editorial this morning assuring us that all was well on the Appalachian Trail? How much thinking do you do before you buy into a politician's obvious lies.

You people could really serve this community and this state if you could think of yourselves as something more than a public relations tool for the Republican Party.

Did you read what you wrote? Seriously? First of all Clinton is white also and he was not removed from office. So tell me how the Clinton case makes this racisim if Sanford is not remove? Second, your guess would be wrong. Sanford wanted nothing to do with the government "bailout"/ownership money. Have you paid attention to ANY news articles in the past or do you just spout out your illiterate crap? he needs to be vetoed? Do you know what that word means, because it doesn't fit in that sentence. Next, why would the school system get the money from him selling HIS house? Would you sell your house and give the money to someone else? No, but based on your typing you probably don't have a job that pays enough to buy a beach house. And lastly, go back to the hills? He's from Sullivan's Island. What hills?
