DOE hosting fair for stimulus-funded SRS positions
ALLENDALE - One of South Carolina's largest employers is visiting an area with the state's highest unemployment, looking to fill thousands of new jobs.
Organizers are expecting big crowds in Allendale for the fourth of six town hall meetings and job fairs sponsored by the U.S. Energy Department.
Employment agencies hope to fill an estimated 3,000 jobs at the former nuclear weapons complex along the South Carolina-Georgia border that will be funded by $1.6 billion in stimulus money.
Earlier this month, about 2,000 attended a similar job fair in nearby Barnwell.
South Carolina's unemployment rate set a state record high of 12.1 percent in May, the third highest in the nation. Allendale County marked the highest jobless rate in the state, with 22.1 percent.
