Deputies make arrest in McClellanville shooting

Charleston County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a man accused of shooting another man three times in the back at a McClellanville gas station Monday.

Warrants charge Alonza Dennis, 44, of Charleston with assault and battery with intent to kill, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

Affidavits say Dennis shot Moses Alford in the back three times and once each in the right forearm and in the right leg at the Kangaroo gas station at 10105 U.S. Highway 17 North.

Alford told deputies arriving at the scene that he had been shot by an unknown man. He was taken to the Medical University Hospital where he told investigators that he had received a phone call from a person whose voice he recognized, the affidavits say.

He made arrangements to meet the man at the gas station to sell clothing. When he arrived at the rear of the building a man he didn't know approached him and pointed a revolver at him, demanding that he give up his money and clothing, the affidavits say.

The victim told police he was shot when he attempted to run. Alford identified Dennis from a photo lineup, according to the affidavits.

Dennis is scheduled to appear at a bond hearing this afternoon.

Charleston County Sheriff's Maj. John Clark said more arrests are expected.
