Update: Sanford to return to Columbia Wednesday

Governor was 'clearing his head' on Appalachian Trail

Gov. Mark Sanford checked in with his chief-of-staff this morning from his hike on the Appalachian Trail, one day after his disappearing act got the country buzzing.

"It would be fair to say the governor was somewhat taken aback by all of the interest this trip has gotten," press secretary Joel Sawyer said. "Given the circumstances and the attention this has garnered, the governor communicated to us that he plans on returning to the office tomorrow." Sanford did not say where he was on the trail or how many voicemail messages he had, Sawyer said.

In this April 3, 2009 file photo, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford fields questions during a news conference in Columbia, S.C. Sanford's wife Jenny said, Monday, June 22, 2009, she did not know the location of the two-term Republican chief executive. Sanford's staff declined to disclose where he was.

The governor ditched his security detail last Thursday and took a state vehicle on a trip without telling his wife or the state's top law enforcement officer where he went.

Sanford, who is very health conscious, has said publicly that goes for runs without his security.

Officials with SLED did not return phone calls or e-mails Monday seeking information about the governor's use of the agency's vehicles.

State Sen. John M. "Jake" Knotts, Jr., a retired law enforcement officer, released a statement Tuesday. "I'm happy to hear that Governor Sanford has finally contacted his office after being missing from the state for five days," he said. "While I believe every person deserves a vacation, our constitution gives only one man authority to act in case of an emergency — the Governor of South Carolina. Should the Governor decide to vacation away from South Carolina again, it is my sincere hope that he will take his security detail and keep his cell phone on so that he can be reached in case of a large-scale emergency. If he is not willing to do so, he should turn his gubernatorial authority over to the Lt. Governor."

Knotts also said that he had many questions about Sanford's use of a state vehicle.

He said a SLED vehicle assigned to the governor likely had weaponry, armor, blue lights and other features "that can sustain the protection of the officers and the passengers."

He said people who drive such vehicles typically must be commissioned law enforcement officers.

"Let's just say this: I'm a retired police officer with 30 years of service, and I can't go out there and get in a SLED vehicle and drive it away." He said if an unauthorized person drove off in a SLED vehicle, "they would be in jail."

He said he had other questions about the use of a state vehicle. "Where was this vehicle parked? In the Atlanta airport? Or an Appalachian trail parking lot? And how would the state Insurance Reserve justify it if there were a wreck?"

Knotts said the situation raises questions about Sanford's leadership. "He talks about running South Carolina like a business, but I don't know of any business executive who takes off without leaving his assistant in charge and accountable to the people."

Senate Minority Leader John Land, D-Manning, said he does not know of any other governors who have had a similar relationship with the State Law Enforcement Division.

Land is one of the longest serving state lawmakers, first elected to the House in 1975 and having served in the Senate since 1977.

"It's just a courtesy to tell SLED where you're going to be," Land said.

The governor is in charge of the South Carolina National Guard, the Department of Public Safety and the penal system, among other state agencies.

"If some emergency happens, he has the authority to act," Land said. "If he does not vest the lieutenant governor with that authority, that leaves the state in a precarious situation."

Land said he finds the governor's behavior to be weird and erratic.

"When your wife and family don't know where you are, that's really strange," Land said. "What kind of husband and father would leave his family without telling his family where he is and how to get in touch with him? That's a really strange action on a married man's part, and on Father's Day."

Land and his wife of 43 years have three children.

Brian King, spokesman for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, based in Harpers Ferry, W.V., said Sanford's visit coincided with Sunday' s Naked Hiking Day. The conservancy isn't exactly sure how Naked Hiking Day originated, but word of it crops up every so often on a slow news day, King said.

The group thinks the holiday originated with a Chicago sports columnist about 15 years ago. King said he didn't know if there were any naked hikers this year because he didn't go and check.

Whether it's illegal to be naked on a public trail depends on where the hiker is. The trail runs through 14 states and about 250 jurisdictions, where in a lot of places indecent exposure would apply. In a recent year, Maryland police arrested eight naked hikers observing the day. About 3.5 million to 4 million hikers use the trail every year.

"The point is, it's pretty self indulgent to go and get their jollies on public land where there are families," King said.

King said he doesn't have any information on where Sanford was hiking. On longer trips, the conservancy recommends that long-distance hikers leave an itinerary at home and check in periodically. But for a shorter trip, like Sanford's, King said he doesn't know if many people would observe the recommendations.

King said he is happy to know that the governor thought of the Appalachian Trail as a good getaway.

"The whole idea with the trail was to get away from the stress of modern life," King said. Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine is also known for taking time off after the Legislative session to take his children hiking on the trail, King said.

Nothing in the state Constitution requires the governor to announce his travel plans, or even to declare when he is out of state.

In fact, beyond the line of succession, the Constitution is vague on many of the movements surrounding the governor, though it does allow for the lieutenant governor to take over for the governor's absence during an emergency.

Article 4, Section 11 covers only the "removal of the Governor from office by impeachment, death, resignation, disqualification, disability, or removal from the State, (that) the Lieutenant Governor shall be Governor."

It reads that "In the case of the temporary disability of the Governor and in the event of the temporary absence of the Governor from the State, the Lieutenant Governor shall have full authority to act in an emergency."

Temporary absence and temporary disability are not defined further.

An Attorney General's opinion from the 1970s concludes the lieutenant governor possesses authority to extradite prisoners in the governor's absence. The lieutenant governor can determine when an emergency exists, it says.

Sen. Glenn McConnell announced Tuesday he plans to introduce legislation similar to federal law that would mandate security coverage for the lieutenant governor and governor Governor that would protect the order of succession in South Carolina.

"While we can all sympathize with Mark Sanford's need for rest and relaxation, these are issues that are bigger than a single person and fundamentally affect how we operate as a state government should there be a crisis or an emergency that requires prompt action and response. This is vitally important in post 9-11 world," McConnell said in a statement.

House Speaker Bobby Harrell, R-Charleston, said first, he hopes the governor is safe. Secondly, Harrell said he hopes Sanford has a good explanation as to why he's been out of touch all this time.

"If a governor is going to go off by himself where he cannot be reached and without his security, then he should have to transfer that authority during that period of time," Harrell said. "But the real answer is a governor shouldn't do those things."

Harrell said he wanted more information before he commented on the governor's judgment: "I have difficulty passing judgment on someone or something until I have all the facts and I have to believe there's some rational explanation for all of this. I want to hear that before I express judgment on the things I don't know."

Former Democratic Gov. Jim Hodges said while he served from 1999 to 2003 the SLED detail was like family.

"They were always with me," he said. "Their job is to be with you at all times to keep you in contact, not only for your safety but as a lifeline to other government officials in the event there were problems."

Hodges, who lost his re-election bid to Sanford, said the SLED detail went on vacation with his family. During his administration, Hodges said the family was vacationing on Fripp Island when he needed to leave to get back to the Statehouse to deal with the firestorm over the Confederate battle flag. Another time, the family was away when a tornado hit Myrtle Beach and local officials asked Hodges to come and help reassure tourists that the area was safe to come visit.

Some instances only a governor can handle, Hodges said, such has helping to close a business deal or offering incentives for a company to stay in the state, he said.

The issue is not whether an emergency would arise, Hodges said. "You never know when a crisis is going to strike the state or the country; you can't afford to be out of touch when that happens," Hodges said.

Hodges said the only time he recalls leaving without a security detail was drop his children off at school before the SLED agent had arrived for the day.

"I saw the look on the SLED agent's face and that's all it took," Hodges said.

He added, "I don't ever recall any instances of driving a state vehicle or them not being around."

As for Sanford's chances as a candidate for the 2012 presidential election, Hodges said the governor should focus on his second term. Sanford has dismissed talk of running for president, but his name is frequently mentioned among some conservative groups.

"He needs to worry about the job he has and not the one he wants," Hodges said.

Senator Jake Knotts has gone way over the top this time trying to embarrass the Governor.

Cell phone location records are only available to law enforcement through a court order and Senator Knotts misused his position by having SLED obtain those records.

If Senator Knotts can get the Governor's cell phone records he can get any citizen's records too. This is a classic example of abuse of power as Senator Knotts is not in the chain of succession for replacing the Governor.

That is far too much power for an ex-cop senator and the P&C news reporter should have researched this story before becoming a part of Senator Knott's scheme to discredit the Governor.

I think it's great that Gov. Sanford is into being " fit " . He has done a great job of turning South Carolina's economy " fit " and now he's working on his own personal agenda . May the Lord bless Mr. Sanford , his family , and the great people of South Carolina ! And may someone step up with enough money to pay for his mental health treatment which he so obviously is in need of .

Sanford must have gotten used to the limelight and decided to throw a temper tantrum now that he is back to being his own irrelevant self.

It just shows what an ignorant selfish drama queen he is pulling something like this over the Fathers day weekend.

The best thing he can do is stay gone.

I don't think SC will melt away just because the governor took a few days off. I strongly suspect he can be reached in an emergency. It's not like he has to take calls from bohickets like Knotts while he's taking a crap, why can't he have a few days away from the capital?

Seems to me that anyone who accepts public office knows the responsibilities and should fulfill all of them during his tenure. That's one of the many reasons that person is elected, and that person so agrees upon election. It goes with the territory.

I surely understand our governor's need to 'get away' to refresh himself--who doesn't? I do not understand his failure to follow the rules/requirements of his office. This situation does make him appear irresponsible and petulant to say the least.

Just ask Jim Hodges what happens when Mr Sanford takes time to recharge his batteries. Knowing that 2010 is going to make 1994 look like a democratic surge he is planning on how to expose these socialist legislators to the angry public. This is so entertaining the same folks cry when he is governing cry when he is taking time off. It is clear that many hate Sanford more than they love South Carolina.

Maybe it's something he frequently does when the legislature session ends, and maybe it was planned and his family and staff were kept in the loop and maybe this is just business as usual for our governor. If Governor Sanford was a Liberal, your newspapers,(and MSNBC), would be extolling his hike as giving an excellent example to the youth of South Carolina in living a healthy

Besides, does anyone really think that the good people of South Carolina would elect as Governor a man who would be so irresponsible as to simply "disappear" without leaving anyone any way to get in touch with him or know where he was?
Mrs. Sanford is a smart woman, I am sure she knew where her husband was going but was not about to play the liberal media's game of smear the Governor.

Why Bless you little heart harold. Gracias for the compliment! ;-)

Luna: Yes, Governor Sanford, much like most other governors has utilized the mainstream media in order to get his message to the masses. However I don't remember Gov. Sanford running in front of a camera decrying how members of the Legislature have 'disappeared' because he didn't get a return call.

This is much ado about nada.

And because of this unwarranted attention, if he decides to try to explain his need for a few days of privacy it will sound like an excuse.

Due to the "due diligence" (sarcasm) of certain elements of our "esteemed" state legislature (sarcasm again) we are once again in the national political spotlight.

This could have handled via discreet inquiries.

Even if the Governor's intent was less than esoteric and his REAL intent was to publicly pout, it doesn't excuse the likes of State Senator Knotts' or Lt. Gov. Bauer's overarching need to publicize their 'opinions' on the subject.

Again, methinks THEIR motives are less than pure and more than likely based in personal gain.

Saint, a responsible company owner or boss will tell people where he or she is going on a vacation, leave contact information, and probably not take a company car without telling anyone. Any boss or company owner who disappears for a few days on an unannounced trip, leaves no one in charge and takes company property to do it isn't going to be in that position for long. That kind of behavior in a corporate setting is a good way to get fired or to get treated to a no-confidence vote.

As governor I'm sure he's able to take a vacation, but he needs to be responsible enough to plan it, let people know where he will be and leave someone in charge. Ditching the job for a few days and ducking out on security isn't a responsibly planned, well thought out vacation; it's a disaster waiting to happen.

I think the site moderators work on a purely complaint-driven system, Artemis. I don't imagine they look at the comments unless someone directs them to do so by clicking on the "Suggest removal" link.

As for the cell phone, I can barely get good service in Charleston, who actually thinks that he would get service on the Appalachian Trail. DUH!

With all this, he should have transferred power to Andre Bauer until his return. Once again, our dearest Gov is doing an end run around the rules to suit what he wants and not what is best for the state of SC.

First of all, this would be embarrassing no matter which party our governor belonged to. If a Democratic governor had taken off for five days without notifying his staff of his whereabouts or establishing an alternate chain of command, it would be wrong, and it is wrong here, too. It's also a terrible political move for a man who's shown considerable interest in one day running for president - this will not be forgotten by the media and it will come back to haunt him should he choose to run for national office in the future.

Does Sanford have the right to take a vacation? Of course he does, just like any other public official from any party. However, leaving one's post without ensuring that government can still operate in the event of an emergency is irresponsible, and Sanford will have to answer for his actions - or lack thereof.

We essentially have two options on whether or not to believe that, each with their own equally undesirable implications.

Either they're telling the truth, in which case Sanford up and disappeared without telling anyone and without leaving anyone in charge. In this case, his competency and dedication to his job are called into question.

Or they're not being truthful, in which case Sanford went on a typical vacation jaunt but is surrounded by liars who are trying to make him look bad. In this case, his competency and awareness of those he works and lives with are called into question.

Either way, it doesn't paint a flattering picture of Governor Sanford.

Thug...I agree- there are some of the usual suspects here that post all anti GOP, anti anything conservative- and that is their MO. Completely agree. However, you have to admit there are just as many mindless Obama bashers as well- the ones that have absolutely no substance to their posts other than.."he's a muslim!", or "he's not even a citizen!" or "all hail the Obamessiah!". Those types of posts bring nothing to the table and do not further friendly debate and sparring.

I enjoy good respectful debate, and there are a few posters here that do that- I usually include you thug, liberals, and definitely ltgrunt in that category. Black Reign most of the time is civil, but sometimes he(or she- I have no idea of BR's identity- no slight intended, BR) gets out of control.

Greyrider, when you take a vacation do you do it with no apparent planning, taking a company car and not letting any of your colleagues know where you're going or how to find you?

I don't love my job enough to give up vacation time. When I do take vacations, though, I submit a time-off request form with the proper amount of notice ahead of time and let my co-workers know what they need to do in my absence. Oh, and I TELL MY WIFE.

It isn't that people are opposed to Sanford taking a vacation. The issue at hand is that people are opposed to Sanford bailing on his responsibilities and leaving his family, his staff, his lieutenant governor and the people of his state in the lurch.

I'm a camping fan myself, and I've taken many a family trip to the Alleghenies, but the key is to do it properly and responsibly, not just on a whim and without any thoughts as to the consequences.

For those of you crying about his privacy, He is NOT a private citizen! He is the Chief Executive of the state of S.C. If he wanted privacy, He should've remained a private citizen. This could've all been avoided if he just informed his whereabouts. Personally, I and perhaps the majority of the people here in S.C. or the nation for that matter could've careless where he went. In his official capacity as Gov. of S.C. it's the way the IDIOT went about doing it. This guy has EMBARRASSED the citizens and this state beyond reproach, and yet his croonies continue to defend him. The people of S.C. deserves much better than this. Personally, I'm TIRED of being embarrassed by this CLOWN, and I'm sure there are many others who express my sentiments exactly. This also speaks much of his character and INTEGRITY since his staff knew and LIED stating they knew NOTHING about his whereabouts. It's sad, but the majority of the voters in this state continue to vote in people who subject us to NEEDLESS ridicule and being the JOKE to the nation and the world. They will either elect the current Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer who holds contempt for the law and is ABOVE the law, or either the current Atty. Gen. Henry McMaster who is only obsessed with trying to prosecute Craig's List since he has accomplished NOTHING as the state's Chief Law Enforcement Officer. He's now associated with a BIGOTED aide criticizing First Lady Michelle Obama as being a descendant of a Gorilla who escaped from the local zoo. And you wonder why S.C. AMAZING (anonymous) says...

Curiouser and curiouser:

The whereabouts of Gov. Mark Sanford was unknown for nearly four days, and some state leaders question who was in charge of the executive office.[..]

Neither the governor's office nor the State Law Enforcement Division, which provides security for governors, had been able to reach Sanford after he left the mansion Thursday in a black SLED Suburban SUV, said Sen. Jake Knotts and three others familiar with the situation but declined to be identified.

Sanford's last known whereabouts had been near Atlanta because a mobile telephone tower picked up a signal from his phone, authorities said. His office now knows where he is, Adams said.

First lady Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press earlier Monday her husband has been gone for several days and she did not know where.

The governor's state and personal phones had been turned off and he had not responded to phone or text messages since at least the weekend, a source familiar with the situation said.

Most mobile phones cannot be tracked if they are turned off.

Knotts, a longtime Sanford critic, said he contacted SLED Chief Reggie Lloyd Saturday after he heard reports the governor could not be reached.

"Chief Lloyd confirmed that my information is legitimate," Knotts said. "He shared my concerns" about succession of power in Sanford's absence, the Lexington Republican said. Lloyd could not be reached immediately on Monday.

"I was recently made aware that Governor Sanford has frequently been eluding SLED agents and disappearing at odd times," Knotts said. Previously, Sanford has not been out of all contact - including with his own office - for this long before, a source, who insisted on anonymity, said.

Allegedly, Sanford has been located, or at least his whereabouts are known, but the story generally leaves more questions than answers.

(P)ulling a disappearing act like this -- whatever the reason -- is a decidedly odd

FOX NEWS

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's mysterious disappearance into the depths of the Appalachian Trail has sparked a wave of criticism and concern from the state capital, with one lawmaker going so far as to question Sanford's "mental state."

The two-term Republican governor will be returning to his office Wednesday, according to a spokesman. Though Sanford had been incommunicado for four days.

Local media and lawmakers can't stop scratching their heads at why Sanford would abandon the capital without maintaining phone contact and notifying key people of his whereabouts -- like the lieutenant governor, who did not know where Sanford was and said he'd been rebuffed by the governor's staff when he tried to find out.

"This is bizarre thought process and bizarre actions. It just shouldn't happen," said state Sen. Jake Knotts, a fellow Republican who is also a known Sanford critic. "What would the world think if the president did that?"

Knotts told FOXNews.com he has no problem with Sanford taking some time off but that he should be reachable -- or submit written notice ahead of time transferring authority to the lieutenant governor in his absence. He said the governor was pulling a "shenanigan."

Carol Fowler, Democratic Party chairwoman, said that since the constitution does not define emergency, a tornado or prison problem or some other issue could have triggered a "constitutional crisis" about who wields authority in his absence.

"The governor just abandoned his job," she told FOXNews.com.

This little detour and frolic down the Appalachian Trail is not exactly what people are looking for in a president. ... He should at least let the lieutenant governor know that he's leaving town."

Lt. Gov. Andrew Bauer said he had not been put in charge in Sanford's absence.

"I cannot take lightly that his staff has not had communication with him for more than four days, and that no one, including his own family, knows his whereabouts," said Bauer.

One lawmaker called the move "erratic." Several critics noted that Sanford was leaving his four sons to themselves on Father's Day weekend.

"His lack of attention to his family responsibilities doesn't fit at all with South Carolina's values," Fowler said in a written statement.

"But the manner in which Sanford handled his extended hike made him "concerned for his mental state," Knotts said.

The state lawmaker noted the governor's past quirky behavior -- particularly a 2004 stunt in which Sanford brought live pigs to the House to drive home a point about "pork-barrel" spending. Outraged lawmakers squealed at the time that the governor was "insulting" his state with the stunt. Worst of all, the pigs apparently were not housebroken.

"They defecated all over the carpet and lobby," Knotts recalled. "Crapped all over everybody, news reporters, everybody. ... It's things like that."

other questions?

Why did Jenny Sanford say her husband was off "writing" when he was in fact hiking? Why did she first say she didn't know where he was and then said he did know where he was?

Why did the lieutenant governor's office say Sanford's Chief of Staff knew where he was but when Andre Bauer returned to Columbia, he couldn't get him on the phone?

Why did the GPS trace on his cell phone ping to Atlanta when the Appalachian Trail starts more than 150 miles north of there?

And why is the governor's press shop - which is usually one of the best in the country at quickly responding - offer conflicting statement after conflicting statement?

But the bottom line is that nothing adds up. There is something larger at play here.

It doesn't take a stealthy investigator to figure that out. And I guarantee that if they had concocted this story in front of a grand jury, they would have all been indicted.

ANSWER THIS ONE?

Why did the GPS trace on his cell phone ping to Atlanta when the Appalachian Trail starts more than 150 miles north of there?

Thank GOD there ARE some people with an ounce of intelligence! Knotts is attacking Sanford for pretty much no good reason, and those of you who are so vocal in supporting him should look into what he has supported and not, and should take a minute to wonder why exactly he bothers to call himself a Republican, let alone pretend to be a representative of this state. And Andre Bauer is an irresponsible idiot who has nerve to complain about Gov. Sanford. Bauer, the genius who crashed an airplane, and had how many complaints about speeding over 100 mph on the interstate and expecting the Highway Patrol to let him off just because he's the Lt. Gov., should keep his mouth shut before he makes himself look even more stupid than he already has. And "as a former law enforcement officer", why isn't Knotts a little more concerned with Bauer blatantly breaking the law and setting a poor example for this state?! Perhaps Knotts and Bauer should both change parties and become Democrats. They sure aren't Republicans with any self-respect, and NEITHER one of them will be getting my vote, EVER.

And why hasn't anyone pointed out that Gov. Sanford recently sent an email to his supporters encouraging them to look into Nikki Haley and her principles, and the email pretty much said that's who he's going to support in the upcoming election? That article/email can be viewed here: http://www.governorsanford.com/.

Only those too ignorant to actually read what Gov. Sanford was trying to accomplish by refusing the stimulus money actually believe he was wrong. He was trying to HELP our state, and certainly didn't gain many admirers for it. But he continued to fight for it because he truly believed it was what is best for our state. Maybe those of you who like to bash Gov. Sanford should take a minute to think about THAT!

Mark Sanford spotted at Hartsfield-Jackson boarding plane, TV station in S.C. now says
5:29 pm June 23, 2009, by Jim Galloway

The story of the disappeared Gov. Mark Sanford of South Carolina gets stranger by the hour.

The Associated Press is reporting that Sanford will cut short a secretive Appalachian Trail hike and return to work Wednesday after revelations he'd been gone for four days with no contact with his staff, wife or state leaders.

But the following was posted a few minutes ago by WYFF News 4, a TV station in Greenville, S.C.:

On Tuesday, sources told News 4's Nigel Robertson that a state vehicle is missing and was tracked down, not to the Appalachian Trail, but to the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta.

Sources told Robertson that a federal agent spotted Sanford in the airport boarding a plane. Robertson was told that the governor was not accompanied by security detail.

Sanford has been out of reach for more than four days, including Father's Day.

Sawyer has emphasized that the governor was hiking on the Appalachian Trail and that it wasn't something the staff or Jenny Sanford were concerned about.

But sources told WYFF News 4 that the federal agent who spotted Sanford saw him at the Atlanta airport, which is about 80 miles from the start of the trail.

WYFF News 4 has not yet confirmed where the plane was going or how the governor got to the airport, but it is clear there are two very different stories.

News 4 called the governor's office, and was told again by staffers that they stand by their original statement that the governor is hiking the Appalachian Trail. They did not want to comment on this story.

It is possible, of course, that Sanford was headed for the other end of the Appalachian Trail.

Just when you think the liberals cannot top themselves, there they go again! OMGOSH! I cannot believe how many people are so gullible about this story!!! Governor Sanford is a family man who adores his wife and children. There is absolutely no way on earth he would leave for any length of time without telling his wife where he was going. Anyone with any common sense would realize, for the Governor's privacy and so that his wife wouldn't be "lying" when asked (harassed) about his wereabouts, she said that she didn't know where he was b/c she technically didn't know "where" he was (on the trail). Further, Governor Sanford would never leave his children on Father's Day weekend without having consulted with them first. I'm certain Governor Sanford has at least one other means of contact for his family - one that's private... perhaps a personal cell phone/blackberry?!!! Had anyone "needed" the Governor, you can bet your bottom dollar that his wife could have contacted him within minutes. The far reaching, suggestive comments and questions made by Land are unfounded and unprofessional. In fact, they define defamation. How dare he?

All of these SC public figures, who took the time to neatively comment publicly about something they know very little about at the time of comments, need to put forth 1/64 of the same effort into doing their jobs. Honestly, it reminds me of behavior found in elementary school! The Governor has to be bent over double laughing at the absurd lengths in which these "grown men" will go in order to try to discredit him.

Let's cut to the chase...something's going on with Gov. Sanford. He may be having emotional problems, he may be involved in another relationship, he may be aware of some potential problem --- personal or professional --- that the media may be working on and has yet to nail completely. But it's clear his actions are not those of a rational human being. Something's up, and he can claim to have simply walked the Appalachian Trail, but something's going on and it doesn't have anything to do with hiking. With Senator Vitter's dalliance with a prostitute-escort, and Senator Ensign's romp with a married woman who worked on both his Senate and campaign staff, it seems that male Republican office holders who claim to be family values adherents are, in fact, some of the worst hypocrites when it comes to keeping their pants zipped and their hands off married women or wayward women of the night. It'll be interesting when it comes out --- and it will eventually come out --- what's really behind Sanford's disappearing act. And since the wife hadn't a clue, my money's on another woman being involved.

"The left is consumed by hate and failure."

It's more accurate to say that extremists on both sides are consumed by hate and failure. Intelligent, moderate people of either persuasion are more likely to be open to dialogue and respectful of each others' stances and worldviews. Unfortunately, because the most vocal, outspoken and controversial speakers are the ones who get the most attention and draw in the most advertisement dollars, we live in a country where extreme, uncompromising, unforgiving zealots direct party politics.

"Only a simpleton would believe that his family and top staff people didn't know how to contact him if needed.

Either the people around him are liars or they were in the dark; neither case presents a reassuring picture of our governor. He's entitled to a vacation, which just about EVERYONE has been saying, but he has a responsibility to notify the next person in the chain of command. He doesn't absolutely need to announce his private comings and goings to the newspapers, but in failing to keep even the lieutenant governor apprised of his whereabouts, Sanford dropped the ball at the absolute best. At worst, this raises serious questions about his competence to perform the duties of the office.

Sanford's car found at Columbia airport

GOVERNOR'S 'HIKING' ALIBI FURTHER UNRAVELS, MAY BE COVER-UP

The mystery into Mark Sanford's six-day disappearance deepened Tuesday night as new evidence cast further doubt onto the governor's "hiking" alibi.

CNN Political Producer Peter Hamby tracked down Sanford's state-issued black Chevy Suburban at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

That information would seem to further contradict Sanford's spokesman's claim that the governor spent the weekend hiking along the Appalachian Trail - which is roughly a two hour drive north of Atlanta.

Added Hamby:

The SUV is outfitted with blue police lights and two-way radio. Inside the vehicle: A baseball cap, running shoes, sunscreen, a pair of shorts, a canvas bag and a sleeping bag.

A parking permit for the school attended by Sanford's children is visible on the windshield.

The vehicle was parked in the surface lot at the airport's main commercial terminal, which Sanford frequently uses to fly out of South Carolina.

For those attempting to keep up, Sanford now apparently hopped on a flight from Columbia, left his cell phone (which was tracked by GPS) somewhere south of Atlanta, then hitched a ride 150 miles to and from the Appalachian Trail to do some writing and hiking, and now he is on his way back to South Carolina.

Something just doesn't add up here. And meanwhile, the state still has no acting chief executive.

First of all, I dont believe for a second that he would leave town for several days and not tell his wife where he was going (unless he has a mistress with him). Second, he's doing exactly the same thing now for the citizens of SC that he did when he is physically in office --- NOT A BLOODY THING (other than cooking up schemes to oppose/contradict the President). Third, we don't give a flip where Sanford is...Fourth, the media, especially TV stations in Columbia need to quit beating this very dead horse before i call PETA on them.
