Fair tax meeting in Summerville

A Summerville Fair Tax meeting will be 6:30 p.m. June 18 at 835 S. Main St.

The group meets the third Thursday of every month with the goal of Fair Tax passage on the federal and state levels. Questions will be answered, recent Fair Tax events in the Legislature will be discussed, and summer events for educating taxpayers about the benefits of the Fair Tax will be planned.

Breast cancer screening set

The Royal Foundation and Royal Missionary Baptist Church will present The Circle of Hope's Ladies Night Out: A Breast Cancer Screening Initiative. The foundation and church will join with the Hollings Cancer Center and Best Chance Network to offer free breast cancer screenings 6-9 p.m. July 10 at the Felix Pinckney Community Center.

This event targets low-income, uninsured or under-insured African-American women in Berkeley, Dorchester and Charleston counties.

Screenings will be administered by professional health care providers. Women also will be educated about breast health and cancer by the Komen Foundation. Refreshments, speakers and music will be provided.

The event is made possible by the Circle of Hope Grant, which started in April and will run until March 2010.

Hunter trail ride for Rein & Shine

The first Hunter Pace and Trial Ride to benefit the Rein & Shine therapeutic riding center will be June 20 at Poplar Grove. The event runs 8 a.m.-noon and costs $45 per rider with advance registration; $55 on event day; $35 for junior riders; and $20 nonriders. Lunch is included in the entry fee.

Riders can choose between a 4-mile course and an 8-10-mile course. Prizes will be awarded. Contact Dee Ann Bauer at dbhunterpace@gmail.com or 270-5040.

Center program to host ceremony

The United Methodist Relief Center's Striva Community Youth Service Program will host a graduation and awards ceremony tonight at 7 at Grace Reformed Episcopal Church, 300 U.S. Highway 52 and Stoney Landing Road, Moncks Corner.

The program pairs local youths with College of Charleston mentors to help with home rehabilitation for low-income S.C. families.

Twenty-four new students and 12 new mentors participated in this year's program.
